To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BACHE, a citizen of the United S.tates,residing at Boundbrook, in the county of Somerset and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Packages, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in packages intended chiefly for roofing material or roof-covering and the accessories neces sary to secure the covering to a roofsuch as nails, tin-caps, and cementand has for its object to provide what may be termed a selfcontained package of novel arrangement that is, one which comprises the material itself and the accessories (such as above named and which are well-known to the trade) used in the laying of the roof-covering.

In the marketing of roofing material by the manufacturers it has been found of great importance that given packages of material shall be accompanied by proper implements for securing the cover to the roof, which in ordinary practice consists of nails, tin-caps, and cement, as is well known to the trade, and much difficulty has been experienced when these necessary implements are shipped in a package separate from the roofing material by reason of delays in transit, resulting often in the non-delivery of the package containing the implements at the same time with the roofing material and often in the loss of the package containing the implements, and a suitable package which comprises or is made up of a roll of roofing material containing within itself the necessary implements for securing it to a roof supplies a recognized need and insures the receipt of the roofing material and implements at the same time and avoids possible loss of the implements.

My invention consists in a package con structed and arranged as hereinafter set forth and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, part of the package of material being broken away to show the inner arrangement. Fig. 2 is a central sectional View of a package constructed according to my invention. Fig. 3 is an end view, and Fig. 4: a detail of one of the wedges. In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicates the sheet of materialf0r instance, roofing materialwhich is wound upon itself into the form of a roll, leaving a central bore 2, which constitutes a receptacle to receive the packages of implements-such as nails, tin-caps, and cementwhich are designated in the drawings by the numerals 3, 4, and 5. It is important that these packages be safely confined in the receptacle, and to accomplish this purpose I provide closures for the end openings or months of the receptacle consisting of Wedges 6 of suitable material and of proportions adapted to contract the end openings or months of the receptacle sufficiently to prevent the escape of the contained implements. A suitable number of wedges for the purpose will be four, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but a greater or lesser number sufficient to perform the function hereinafter described may be employed within the scope of my invention. As shown in the drawings, these wedges are introduced between convolutions of the rollsheet of material at the ends thereof adjacent the end openings of the receptacle 2-that is to say, the wedge or wedges are introduced into or between the convolutions of the roll near or close to the end openings or months of the receptacle, so that in action they deflect the inner convolutions to contract the end openings or months rather than deflect the outer convolutions, as would happen were they introduced into the roll of material adjacent the outer surface thereof, or so far removed from the end openings or months that their action would not serve to contract said end openings or-mouths. Said Wedges operate to press inward the edges of the convolutions of the sheet of material immediately surrounding the receptacle 2 and contract the months or end openings of said receptacle to dimensions less than thedimensions of the packages of implements contained within the receptacle, and thus effectually close the end openings or months of the receptacle and prevent the escape of the packages of implements.

To facilitate the withdrawal of the Wedges, they are provided with suitable handles, which may be of any desired form. In the drawings I have illustrated the wedges as provided with flexible cords 7 to facilitate their withdrawal.

In practice a pair of wedges are inserted between the volutions of the roll-sheet of material at one end adjacent the corresponding end opening of the receptacle, or one wedge is so inserted, if desired, thus contracting that end opening or mouth of the receptacle. Ihe packages of implements are then introduced into the receptacle and the opposite end opening or mouth thereof contracted by the insertion of wedges or a wedge, as described with reference to the first-mentioned end opening or mouth. The package of material is then provided with the usual coverings, which will serve to prevent the entrance into the receptacle of any foreign substance.

By my invention I provide a compact and economical package containing within itself the material to be used and the implements employed in the use of the material.

When it is desired to use the sheet of material, the wedges are withdrawn, the packages of implements removed, and the sheet of material unwound.

Having thus described my invention, what- I claim is- 1. A package comprising a roll of material adapted to be unrolled and having a central receptacle, closures for the ends of the receptacle consisting of wedges introduced between convolutions of the material adjacent and serving to contract the mouths of the receptacle.

2. A package comprising a roll of material adapted to be unrolled and having a central receptacle, closures for the ends of the receptacle consisting of wedges introduced be tween convolutions of the material adjacent and serving to contract the mouths of the receptacle, and provided with means to facilitate their withdrawal.
