EDVARD P. HURD, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO UNITED SHOE MACHINERY COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A COR- PORATION OF NEr JERSEY.
NAIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,520, dated August 16, 1904.
Application iilecl November 17, 1899. Serial No. 737,284. (No model.)
To all whom, t 77mg/ concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD P.- HURD, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Nails, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying' drawings, is a speciiication, like characters on the drawings representing' like parts.
This invention has for its object the production of a novel nail adapted to be driven into a heel to attaclrit to a sole, said nail presenting near one end an upper portion shaped to easily penetrate the inner side of a top lift spanked on the heel after the same has been nailed to the sole, the upper portion of the nail presenting' a large extent of holding-surface.
My novel nail consists of a shank orr body having' a suitable clenchingpoint, a col-lar ex` tending from said body, and an upper portion rising' from said collar and adapted to penetrate a top lift, said upper portion being' of a length preferably less than the thickness of the top lift to be held by it and recessed or indented below its top end. The recesses or indentations, one or more, leave each a lip standing at or near the extremity of the upper portion farthest from the collar, into which recesses the stock of the top lift partially penetrated by the upper portion and expanded may contract to thus retain the top lift impaled on the the upper portion of the nail.
Figure l, in cross-section, shows a heel connected with a sole and upper by a nail made in accordance with my invention, said nail holding the top lift in place. Fig'. 2 is a much enlarged side elevation of my improved nail. Fig. 3 is a top view thereof. Fig. 4 is another view of the nail shown in Fig'. 2 looking' at it from the right. Fig. 5 is a section on the line a" Fig. 4.
Wy improved heel-nail consists, essentially, of a body a, provided with a clenching-point Z1 of any usual or suitable kind, the body and point constituting a shank, which is provided with a collar c, having rising' from it an upper portion d. The under side of the collar at its junction with the body of the nail preferably presents a reinforcing-enlargement c', whichadds very materially to the strength of the nail and prevents the body from being broken transversely in line with the under side of the collar. A nail without such reinforcing-enlarg'ement is liable to be broken when driven into a solid heel. The upper portion CZ rises centrally from the collar and has a curvilinear top end which preferably willbe fiat, said top end, as herein represented, being of substantially circular form or of substantially the same shape as the body of the main part of the shank of the nail, and below its top end the said upper portion is recessed and indented on one or more sides, as at e, to leave thin-edged lips f, (see Fig's. 2 and 4,) which are in the plane of the said curvilinear top end. The recess e is made of a length nearly or quite equal to the full length of the upper portion. When the upper portion is recessed oppositely, any cross-section of the body of the upper portion, as on the line fr x, Fig. 4, will show two longer parallel lines 2 3, (see Fig'. 5,) which constitute the longer sides of the upper portion, said lines crossing the central part of the collar at each side the axial center of the body of the shank, the two shorter ends 4 and 5 of the upper portion terminating, preferably, near the periphery of the collar. The recesses or indentationsaiford spaces below the lipsf, in which a part of the substance of the top lift spanked upon said portion may enter, thus enabling the top lift to beheld in place on the Lipper portions of a plurality of driven nails.
I have shown the top of the upper portion as circular; but it may be elliptical or of any other outline in which the top edge is formed in a continuous curve.
By forming' my nail, as shown, with an upper portion formed in a continuous curve at its top and recessed below the top I am able to secure in one nail facility of entrance-into the stock combined with great holding power for the surfaces of the recessed portions. The
upper portion with a top of such shape enters the stock more readily than it would if otherwise shaped, and the recesses Vformed by cutting away below the top of the upper portion ali'ord a great extent of holding-surface. 4Reeessing the side of the upper portion at more than one place aiords additional holding means Yfor the top lift, and ,l prefer to form th(` recesses on two opposite sides, as shown in the drawings. W hen the recesses are formed on two sides otl the upper portion, the abovementioned advantagesthat is, a combination ol g'reat facility of entrance into the stock and great holding' power for the Surfaces of the recessed portions-are best secured by so forming the said recesses that the distance between the opposite walls of the upper portion shall be least in substantially the diameter of the nail, and by the expression least I mean that the distance between said walls in a diametrical line shall not exceed the distance between said walls at any other part thereof. lt is also preferable that the lips Yformed above said recesses shall be at the eX- tremity otA the upper portion.
The collar on the nail herein shown is represented as circular, and the lines of the walls of the upper portion at the deepest parts of the recesses are made to constitute chords of a circle described within the collar from the longitudinal axis or' the nail.
To illustrate my nail applied as it will be in practice, l have in Fig. l shown a heel having' atop lift held in place by one of my novel nails a. 1n that ligure, A represents the body of the heel, B the top lift, C the upper, D the counter, and E the lining, of a shoe.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isd
l. As an improved article of manufacture, a nail having a collar and an upper portion above said collar` said upper portion having' a top edge 'formed in a continuous curve and being' cut away between its end and said collar tc form a recess, the deepest part of said recess being on a line substantially parallel with a diameter ot' the nail-body, said recess forming with the top end an overhang'ing lip situated inthe plane of said end.
2. A nail having a shank, a` collar, and an upper portion above said collar, said upper portion having' its top edge formed in a continuous curve and having separated recesses in opposite sides which form overhanging lips situated in the top end, the said recesses having their deepest portions along' straight lines and being of such a depth that the thickness or' the upper portion is nowhere less than along the diameter of the nail in the plane of and at right angles to said straight lilies.
3. A heel-nail having a shank, a collar, and an upper portion above said collar, said upper portion being' recessed on opposite sides to form overhanging lips situated in the top end of the nail with a thin web or wall connecting' the lips and the collar, said web being' substantially rectangular in section at its thinnest part and of a width greater than its thickness, and the recesses in the upper portion each being of a length equal to the major part ot' the length of said upper portion.
4:. A nail having a shank, a collar, and an upper portion above said collar, said upper portion having a flat end and being recessed or indented on opposite sides to thereby form overhanging lips extending from, and located in the plane of the top of the upper portion.I and a thin web or wall connecting the lips with the collar, said web being nowhere thinner than on a diameter of said nail.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDARD P. HURD.
