SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,566, dated May 26, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HORACE K. JoNEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Hartford, and State of Con- 5 necticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nails, which improvements are fully set forth and described in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which show, at

My object in this invention is to produce drive-nails, preferably from wire previously I 5 prepared, which are so barbed that they may be easily driven home, but which cannot be .withdrawn without forcibly tearing or splitting the wood in which they are embedded. I accomplish the desired. result by making the body of said nail in the form of a series of barbs concentric with and reaching entirely around said nail, said barbs being an integral part of the line of wire from which the nail is made. In other words, the body of said nail is formed as a series of cones or frustums of cones, each of which is joined at its base to the apex of the next of the series. The side of said barb or cone which first enters the wood (that is to say, the side toward the point) is 0 of a gradual bevel or taper, so that it enters as awedge; but the side toward the head is at right angles, or approximately at right an- (No specimens.)

It will be readily seen that these barbs act as ratchet-teeth as the nail is driven home, and 5 that said nail cannot be removed without great force; also, that, owing to its unusual holding-power, fewer nails need be usedthan with the ordinary cut or wrought nails now in common use. The wire from which said 0 barbed nails are made (see Fl g. 2) is prepared in continuous rods or strips, as described in a separate application for Letters Patent of equal date with this. The ready-prepared barbed wire is then cut into proper lengths 5 for the nails to be made, and said blanks are then headed and pointed by any of the methods now in practical use.

Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent go As a new article of manufacture, a suitably headed and pointed drive-nail whose body portion is formed with a series of concentric barbs or cones, the end of said barbs or cones which confronts the head of the nail being approximately at right angles to the longitudinal center of said body,forming ratchet-teeth, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
