JOSEPH GOBBELS, OE COVINGTON, KENTUCKY.
IMPRCVEMENT IN SCREW-NAILS.
Speoication forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,000, dated May 3,0, 1876; application led March 16, 1876.
To all whom it may con-cern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH GBBELS, of Covington, Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screw-Nails, of which the following is a specification:
This invention is directed to nails which are adapted to be driven like ordinary nails, but which are provided with a screw or spiral thread to enable them to take a rlner hold 4on the wood.
The nail I have devised, which is shown in the accompanying drawing, is a wire nail formed with a head, a, a smooth cylindrical shank, b, a screw-threaded fore end, 0, of steep pitch, and a tapering plain point, d. The screw-thread occupies but a portion of the length of the nail, and is between the smooth cylindrical shank and the tapering point. I make the nail Of annealed wire, and prefer to form the screw-thread by means of the same dies which out and shape the point.
The head of the nail may be nicked, as shown, or plain and without nicks.
The wire screw-nail thus formed possesses many and decided advantages. The plain point allows it to enter the wood easily. The
screw-thread above is sufficient to make the nail take hold tightly of the wood, and, indeed, causes the nail to rotate when being driven, while the smooth cylindrical shank above enters the wood after the screw with ease.. The cost ot' manufacture, also, is but a trifle in `excess ot' that of ordinary nails, 'and the nail itself is decidedly superior.
What I claim as my invention is The described wire screw-nail,1formed with a head, a plain cylindrical stem, a screwthreaded fore end, and a tapering point, as shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof Ihavehereunto signed my name this 7th day of February, A. D. 1876.
