BLOCK-FORM FOR FORMING TILES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1905.
Application filed February 15,1905. Serial No. 245,684.
To a 1.0720171, it wea y concern/.-
Be it known that .l, JOSEPH Rare, J12, a resident of Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, havc invented anew and useful Improvement in Block-Forms for Forming Tiles; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a block-form for making tiles, and has special reference to the making of that class of rooting-tiles shown, described, and claimed in United States Letters Patent No. 78,171, granted to Joseph Rapp on July 5, 1892. Heretofore this class of roofing-tiles when manufactured singly, one at a time, generally required numerous laborious and tedious operations, loss of time, and involved quite an expense in the cost and labor on the same.
The object of my invention is to form roofing-tiles of such a class in asimple and effective manner, whereby such tiles can be easily and quickly made, so as to lessen the cost and labor in the manufacture of the same.
My invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction, and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specilically set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to practice and use my improved block-form for rooting-tiles, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the body, blank, or block form for forming roofingtiles. Fig. 2 is a like view of one of the finished tiles. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the drawings.
As illustrated in said drawings, the body, blank, or block form 1 is shown in Fig. 1 and is formed in the usual manner, by means of a cylinder and a mandrel, into the shape indicated, which consists of the two semicylindrical or rounded sections or portions 2, connected together at one side 3, and the opposite sides of these rounded sections or portions have a flat section or portion 4 connected thereto, from each of which an outwardly-extending flange portion 5 projects at an angle to said flat portions. The rounded portions 2 and flat portions at are each provided on their inner or under sides or faces 2 and 4, re-
grooves 2" and r therein, and such grooves are preferably formed of triangular shape, while extending between the ends of said flat portions 4 is the connecting section or portion 6.
The block-form 1 is scored lengthwise on the under sides 2 of the rounded portions 2 and at the connecting point or end 3 of the same, as at 7, and the block-form 1 is also scored on the outer face (5 of the connecting portion 6 and on each side of the same where it connects with the flat portions at, as at 8. After the block-form 1 has been so formed and scored each rounded section 2 is cut at an angle on each end of the top face or roll side 9' of said rounded portions 2 and at opposite sides, as at 9, by a wire or other means, and the flange portions 5 are also cut in like manner at an angle on each side and at opposite ends of the same, as at 10, while nail-holes 11 are also formed at topend of each i'latportion l ofsaid form 1 and on opposite sides and ends from each other. The block-form 1 is now ready and complete for drying and glazing in the usual manner, and after this is accomplished it is then burned in the usual manner, after which the block can be split by cracking the connecting portions 6 between the flat portion 1, so that such portion 6 can be broken off along the lines 8, and then such block is separated and split along the line 7 in any desired manner to form two sections, so that afterward the parts 9" and 10 at each end of said sections and formed by the angular cut lines 9 and 10 can be removed in the usual manner, and thereby form two complete roofing-tiles, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
It will be evident in the making of rooiingtiles that the block-form for making two tiles can be formed quickly and cheaply and with the employment of very little extra labor or surplus material over the making of asingle tile, while time and expense are reduced in the operations of forming the finished tile after such block-form is made. The blockform is easily and quickly separated to form the two iinished tiles after lnirning, and there is no liability ofthc tile presenting an unsightly appearance or becoming broken in such splitting or separating. The block-form permits the heat to circulate through and around the same during burning, so that the tiles are uniformly burned and the burning greatly facilitated. The grooves for the circulation of air between the tiles when in place and overlapspectively, with a series of longitudinal l ping each other are casilyformcd in theblockform, and such grooves prevent the formation of moisture or admission of waterby capillary attraction between such tiles when in place. The finished tiles after being separated from and formed by the block-form will be in such shape and size that in laying the tiles the tile next above will overlap and nicely fit the tile immediately below it, and in burning in the kiln one block-form can be laid upon another and as close and as snugly as possible.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. A block-form for forming tiles, com prising two tile-sections connected together at one side, an outwardly-extending flange on each of said sections and at the end of the same opposite the connected ends, and a breakable connecting portion extending across and between the ends of said sections and opposite said flanges.
2. Ablock-form for forming tiles, comprising two tile-sections connected together at one side, an outwardly-extending flange on each of said connections and at the end of the same opposite the connected ends, and a breakable connecting portion extending across and between the end of said sections and opposite said flanges, said breakable connection being scored along its joining edges.
3. Ablock-form for forming tiles, comprising two tile-sections connected together at one side, an outwardly-extending flange on each of said connections and at the end of the same opposite the connected ends, said sections being cut at an angle on each flange, and a breakable connecting portion extending across and between the ends of said sections and opposite said flanges.
4. A block-form for forming tiles, comprising two tile-sections connected together at the side, an outwardly-extending flange on each of said connections and at the end of the same opposite the connected ends and being cut at an angle on one end of such side, and a breakable connecting portion extending across and between the ends of said sections and opposite said flanges.
5. Ablock-form for forinlng tiles, compris ing two tile-sections each having a rounded and aflat portion thereon and connected together at one side of said rounded portions,an outwardlyextending flange on each of said sections and at the ends of the same opposite the connected ends, and a breakable connecting portion extending across and between the ends of said section and opposite said flanges.
6. Ablock-form for forming tiles, comprising two tile-sections each having a rounded and a flat portion thereon and connected together at one side of said rounded portions, an outwardly-extending flange on each of said sections and at the ends of the same opposite the connected ends, and a breakable connecting portion extending across and between the ends of said sections and opposite said flanges, said breakable connection being scored along its joining edges.
7. A block-form for forming tiles, comprisingtwo tile-sections each having a rounded and a flat portion thereon and connected together at one side of said rounded portions, an outwardly-extending flange on each of said sections and at the ends of the same opposite the connected ends, said sections being at an angle on each flange, and a breakable connecting portion extending across and between the ends of said sections and opposite said flanges.
8. A block-form for forming tiles, comprising two tile-sections each having a rounded and a flat portion thereon and connected together at one side of said rounded portions, an outwardly-extending flange on each of said sections and at the ends of the same opposite the connected ends. said sections being cut at an angle on one end of such side, and a breakable connecting portion extending across and between the ends of said sections and opposite said flanges.
In testimony whereof I, the said JosErH RAPP, Jr., have hereunto set my hand.
JOSEPH RAPP, JR.
