Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THoMAs S. HOLLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in btaves, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to staves for use in the construction of silos, tanks, barrels and similar round or curved structures.

lhe object of the invention is to provide a stave of the kind referred to which shall be capable of equally advantageous use in the formation of .the structures or articles of the kind referred to whether the diameters or sizes thereof be large 6r small.

A further object is to provide staves of such form that when they are placed edge to edge a firm seating or juncture of the parts in a manner to prevent the entrance or accumulation of moisture is accomplished, and whereby a limited expansion or cont'action of the parts will in no way injure the body of which they form a part.

With these objects in view the invention consists of'a stave having the generic and specific features of form, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed. The stave is illustrated in thc accompanying drawing, in which;

In forming the stave the side 1 which in use is to constitute the outer face of the structure or article of which it is to form a part is somewhat wider than the. reverse or inner face 2, the extent of variance dcpending upon the usc'to which the slave is to be placed. ()nc edge of each stave has formed with it a continuous longitudinal exsertion or rib 3 the outer face of which is portion of a. stave having the rib or cxser tion is brought to a position to enter the groove or way of another stave placed adjacent to it, and firmly held therein, a tight. joint is produced.

The formation of the parts as described permits the perfect juncture of the meeting edges of staves when their respective faces are at different angles to each other. In order to permit the placing and securing of staves in different positions in relation to each other-to form structures or articles of greatly varying diameters or sizes. those por tions of both edges of the stavcs between the grooves or ways and the. ribs or exsertions and the inner and outer faces are bevclcd to form surfaces Those surfaces extend from the respective faces of the stave in directions to form in coiril-incture with such faces. angles greater than right angles. The angularity of the parts may be varied at will. By forming the surfaces 5 as described variation in the relative arrange ment of adjacent stoves is permitted. and therefore the staves may be made of a standard or uniform size and be capable of use in forming articles or structures of a wide rangeof size or diameter.

In the preferred form of the stave as herein shown the greater portion of each edge thereof is composed either of the rib or the groove. lhus 'whcn assembled as described and firmly bound or otherwise sccured togct-h a tight-filling juncture between nearly the entire surface of adjacent edges is formed. preventing entrance of moisture the presence of which would t nd to rot the staves.
