PATENT, OFFICE.
RALPH E. MEHLMAN, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
NAIL.
Application filed August 23, 1924. Serial No. 733,718.-
My invention relates to nails and more particularly to nails of'the double headed type.
Temporary wooden structures, such as scaffolding, concrete forms, patterns, etc, must be firmly nailed. When dismantling these structures, the lumber is split and broken so as to be unfit for further use. Various double headed nails and equivalent devices have beenproduced'to facilitate dismantling these structures and to save the lumber for further use, but the expense of these nails precluded their use on a commercial scale. T
- The objects of my invention are to provide a double headed nail which may be driven with the same ease as the ordinary singleheaded nail and make a firm fastening; which may be uickly removed by a claw without in juring t e lumber, and which may be manufactured in practically the same'manner as a single headed nail.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is. a side elevation of a nail constructed in accordance with my invention, and 4 Figure 2 a View of a modified form of the nail shown in Figure 1.
Referring to Figure 1 of the drawing, 1 indicates the stem of a nail made from heavy wire, 2 a nail head in the form of a lateral flange on the stem, 3 a shank integral with the head, extending upwardly a distance equal to or greater than its diameter, and made of the same diameter as the stem, and 4 a pulling head formed on the shank in a similar manner as head 2 on' stem 1. A small fillet 5 is preferably formed bet-ween stem 1 and head 2, a larger fillet 6 between head 2 and shank 3 and a small fillet 7 between shank 3 and pulling head 4.
In Figure 2, I have shown a pulling head 4 of frusto-conical shape, and the under surface of head 2 making a corner with the surface of stem 1*. In all other respects the nail is similar to that shown in Figure 1 and I have therefore given corresponding parts similar reference characters with the exponent a.
A nail of this type having its stem- 1 and shank 3 made of the same diameter and [of the same wire is like two single headed nails, one long and the other short, integrally connected with the point of the short nail on the head of the long nail, and may be made with practically the same case and facility as the ordinary single headed 'nail. The nail will not bend when driven and will firmly hold the structure when the head engages therewith. It may be quickly removed by a claw,
which may catch hold of the pulling head from any lateral direction, without injuring the lumber.
While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A wire upset nail having a stem or shank, a cylindrical portion above the stemof substantially the diameter of the stem, a frustoconical portion between the stem and the cylindrical portion, the smaller diameter of which is the diameter of the cylindrical portion, and the base of which presents a flat surface to the material into which the nail is to be driven, and a terminal frusto-conical head portion adjacent the end of the cylindrical portion remote from the first mentioned conical portion, the smaller diameter of which .conical portion is the diameter of the cylindrical portion, said conical portions having their conical faces facingeeach other, said cylindrical portion being of a length substantially the thickness of alifting tool whereby the lifting tool may, be readily applied thereto, said nail being integral throughout.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
' RALPH E. MEHLMAN.
