To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HAMILTON SMELZER, of the city of Westmount, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gearing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription of the same.
My invention relates particularly to means for driving the brushes of a middlings purifier whereby the screens are kept clean, and it has for its object to provide means effecting an improved operative connect-ion between a reversing screw shaft and a member for reciprocating such shaft, this application being a divisional part of an ap plication filed by me on June 5, 1909 under Serial No. 500350, and which issued to Patent No. 984307 granted Feb. 14, 1911.
The invention may be said to consist of the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
For full comprehension, however of my invention reference must be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts and wherein Figure 1 is an end elevation partly in sect-ion of my improved gearing; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, also partly in section; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line B B Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a bottom plan View of the gearing.
My improved gearing comprises a bearing 6 formed integrally with a head f movably mounted upon a shaft 9 adapted to be rotated by suitable means, not shown. This shaft is formed with a double thread i the ends whereof at each end of the shaft are taken around the shaft and joined to form a continuous path leading back and forth. The head engages the threads of the shaft by means of an oscillatory key carried thereby, the head being provided with an opening or key passage leading from'the exterior thereof to the shaft and being of sufficient size to permit of the'key being passed therethrough in order that such key may be readily removed and replaced when desired, as in the event of the key breaking, means being provided for removably supporting the key in position engaging the threads of the shaft.
As shown here I prefer to make the head f with a downwardly extending boss j adapted to accommodate the stem m of an oscillatory key having a segmental feather 7c engaging the threads 2' of the shaft, the head being formed with an opening lead- .ing from the bottom of the boss to the shaft 9, the lower portion of the opening being ofsubstantially circular form and. having lateral extensions is adapted to accommodate the ends of the feather when the key is being inserted or withdrawn, while its upper portion is enlarged as at k to permit of oscillation of the key. Shoulders k formed at the inner ends ofthe passages limit the movement of the key into engagement with the threads of the shaft and prevent the feather being pressed too tightly thereagainst.
