NILBUR (J. NORRIS, ()l? TlONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
STUFFlMG- BUEL SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,644, dated February 28, 1905.
Application filed March 12.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that INVILBUR U. Nomns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tiona, in the county of \Varren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful improvements in Stuffing-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stufling-boxes; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
The stufiing-box is particularly adapted for use in oil-wells in connection with the polished rod, and the structure shown is so arranged.
The invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawings as follows: Figure 1 shows a plan view of the structure; Fig. 2, a central section; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2, the view being from the bottom of Fig.
A marks the box proper, in which is arranged the packing-cavity. The box has the screw-thread a atits lower end, which is adapted to screw to a tubing-top, and the opening a, through which the polished rod passes. A. packing B is shown in the packing-cavity. A follower C is arranged in this cavity and. has a shoulder e, on which the spring I) may rest. The spring I) is an ordinary coiled. spring and is in such a position to encircle a polished rod when operating. A. cross-plate llil has the opening 1, through which the polished rod passes. it also has the perforation c for the @tighteningbolts and an annular groove 0 in which the spring I) is arranged. The tightening-bolts F extend through the perforation e and perforations a in the flanges 1904. Serial No. 197,810.
A of the box A. Adjacent to the perforations u are the brace-shoulders 4". These tend to brace the flange a and at the same time furnish a locking means for locking the nutsf' on the bolts F. This structure is a very simple but very ellicient one. The cavity formed by the follower (l isso slight in proportion to its size that the freezing of water in itdoes not break it. The spring being arranged on the follower permits of slight variation in the adjust ment of the cross-plate E without causing the follower to bind either on the walls of the packing-cavity or of the polished rod.
hat I claim as new is A. stufling-box comprising the box proper having the packing-cavity and flanges extending therefrom, said flanges having mrforations for the tightening-bolts; and braces extending from the flange to the walls of the box adjacent to said perforz'itions, the said braces stiffening the flange and locking the nuts of the tightening-bolts; a follower in said cavity; a coiled spring arranged on said follower and adapted to encircle arod passing through the stuffing-box; a cross-plate on the spring; and bolts extending through the cross-plates and through the perforations in the flanges, said bolt being provided with nuts which are locked by braces on the flange.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
Willi-BUR C. NORRJS.
