ATTORNEYS r14: NORRIS PETERS cm, wasnmzmm, o. c.
. earns a NON-SIFTING ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters latent.
Application filed April 3, 1911.
Patented June 27, 1911. Serial No. 618,530.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, Anoosr P. SPITKO, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake, State of Utah, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Non- Sifting Envelops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in the class of envelops designed more especially for carrying merchandise, and the object of the invention is to provide means in connection with the envelop for closing the mouth thereof in such manner as to prevent the escape of comminuted or pulverulent substances at the ends of the flap, where in the ordinary form of envelop there is an opening between the sealing flap and the back of the envelop.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the envelop with the sealing flap closed; Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of the envelop with the flap open; Fig. 3 is a front view of a portion of the envelop; Fig. 4 is a section on the line l1 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing the sealing flaps partly folded.
In the embodiment of the invention shown the body 1 of the envelop is formed by folding the side edges 2 of the sheet onto the body 1, the said edges being connected at the longitudinal center of the body, as indicated at 4. The body is extended beyond the side flaps 2 to form a closing flap 5, which is turned over on the flaps 2 and 3 and sealed as shown in Fig. 1. At the opposite end of the envelop the side edges or flaps 2 are cut away to leave a single ply flap 6, and a stifiening strip 7 is superposed on the inner face of the said flap and sealed thereto. The said strip is preferably of thin pasteboard or still paper, and at its center the strip is provided with a downwardly projecting tongue 8 having a transverse opening 9. The flap 6 is cut away at its center, as indicated at 10 in Fig. 3, and the flap 6 so formed is secured to the tongue 8.
A fastener is connected with the side flaps 2, the said fastener comprising a T-shaped plate having its, body 11 provided with tongues 12 passed through the flaps and bent over upon themselves to hold the plate in place, and a tongue 13. The envelop is transversely creased at 14 to mark the limits of the flap 6 and is also transversely creased at 15.
In using the improved envelop, after the contents have been inserted in the inclosure, the flap 6 is folded onto the envelop. The crease 15 is so placed that the free edge of the flap 6 registers therewith, and the said crease marks the limits of the double flap formed by the superposing of the flap 6. on that portion 16 of the envelop between the creases 14: and 15. The said double flap is now folded onto the body of the envelop, and the tongue 13 is passed through the opening 9 of the tongue 8 and is then bent downwardly as indicated in Fig. 4. The tongue 13 thus holds the double flap closed. It will be noticed that the envelop has in fact a sealing flap whose inner portion is a double ply, while its outer portion is a single ply, and the fiap folds by folding the single ply onto the double ply and then folding the single ply and the double ply onto the envelop.
I claim:
1. An envelop comprising a body having a sealing flap at one end, a stifiening strip arranged transversely of the sealing flap, said strip having a lateral tongue provided with a transverse opening at approximately the center of the strip and extending in the opposite direction from the flap, said flap being cut away at its center to permit the passage of the tongue, the envelop having a transverse crease at the junction of the sealing flap therewith, and a second transverse crease spaced apart from the first crease a distance corresponding approximately to the width of the sealing flap, and forming a double flap between the sealing flap and the body of the envelop, and a flexible metallic tongue on the envelop for engaging the opening of the tongue of the stiffening strip.
2. An envelop comprising a body having a sealing flap, a reinforcing strip arranged transversely of the sealing flap and having a lateral tongue extending in the opposite dimeans on the envelop for holding the tongue rection from the flap, the envelop having a of the reinforcing strip.
transverse crease at the 'unction of the sealing flap therewith, and having a second AUGUST SPITKO' transverse crease spaced apart from the first Witnesses:
crease a distance corresponding approxi- LOYAL L. BEYERIDGE,
mately to the Width of the sealing flap, and DOUGLAS A. SWAN.
Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
