ROMAN EDWARD ADAM, OF CORONA, NEW YORK.
DOOR CHECK AND CLOSER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 27, 1911.
To all whom it may concern. I
Be it known that I, ROMAN EDWARD ADAM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Corona, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Checks and Closers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention pertains to door closers of the kind described in my U. S. Letters Patent 967,289.
In the accompanying drawing on which similar reference letters denote corresponding parts,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device, partly in section; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a detail; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a modified construction, and Fig. 4 is a plan view thereof.
In the drawing, which forms a part of this specification, the door closer comprises a bracket a adapted to be stationarily secured to the door frame P and in which a vertical bolt Z) is rigidly secured. Rotatively mounted on said bolt is a casing 0 rotatably mounted on said bolt and constructed to inclose a spiral spring (Z, sur rounding the bolt 6, one end of which is secured to the bolt and the other to the said casing. An arm 6 fast on the casing and extending transversely to the door D and at a right angle to the vertical axis of the casing carries at its free end a roller f, adapted to bear on the door. Thus far the construction is substantially old.
Since in order to obtain an effective closing device, the spring a? must necessarily be strong, the expansion of the spring after the release of the door causes a too vigorous closing of the door, resulting in the slamming of the same. To obviate this drawback is the object of my present invention. I accomplish this object by providing cam members 9 and h on the opposite surfaces of the stationary member a and the rotary member or casing 0 (Figs. 1 and 2), which are arranged in the path of one another and which, when the member a, at the opening of the door, is turned. will be caused to pass over one another. When by the expansion of the spring, the door will swing back into closing position, the cam members 9' of the member 0 will encounter the members it of the stationary part 6;, whereby the swinging of the door for a moment will be retarded, until the members have passed over one another. The passage of the cam members 9,171, over one another is rendered possible by the casing 0 being yielding in vertical direction, since it is only loosely mounted on the bolt. I prefer, however, to employ the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4. There,
instead of the cam members, a guiding member 71 is attached to the door extending transversely thereto and in the path of the arm 6. This guiding member consists of a plate having a forwardly projecting portion 9' in which a groove 72 is provided containing a curved portion is formed with a curved notch Z. The arm 6 carries a roller m which is engaged in that groove 70. It will be seen that when the roller during the closing of the door moves from left to right, it will first enter the notch Z (see dotted lines in Fig. 4:) and thence gradually move back into the groove 70', is. Thereby the swinging movement of the arm 6 caused by the expansion of the spring 0Z will be retarded and the slamming of the door prevented.
In connection with the retarding mechanism, I provide a device whereby the extent of the opening and closing movement of the door may be controlled. This device in the present example is shown as consisting of an angular notched arm 0, 0 fulcrumed at p in the plate j and capable of being horizontally swung across the groove 7c, 70.
If it is desired to hold the door in open position, the lever 0, 0 after the door was opened, is swung, so that its arm 0 extends across the groove 711,70 as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4. When, during the backward movement of the arm 6, the roller m reaches the arm 0 and engages with its notch 0 in said arm, the door is prevented from closing any farther. According to the adjustment of the position of the lever arm 0, the extent to which the door may be held open can be readily controlled.
If it is desired to lock the door in closed position, the lever 0, 0 is swung to occupy the full line position shown in Fig. 4, in which the arm 0 thereof extends across the rear portion of the groove is and in front of the roller m, engaging it in its notch 0 In that position the lever 0, 0 serves as a very effective burglar proof look.
In addition to the roller m, the arm may carry the roller f which may bear against the door or a spring 8 extending transversely thereof.
Since various other modifications may be designed by those skilled in the artwithout deviating from the principle of my invention, I do not wish to restrict myself to the construction shown and specified.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A, door closer and check, comprising a bracket to be stationarily fastened to the door frame to which the door is hinged, an arm extending at a right angle to said member and rotatively secured to the latter, a
spring acting on said arm, a roller carried by said arm, and a rigid member having an irregularly shaped guide groove and secured to the door in the path of the said arm and serving to retard the expansive action of the spring.
.2. A door closer and check, comprising in combination a bracket to be stationarily fastened to the door frame to which the door is hinged, an arm extending at a right angle .to said member and rotatively secured to the latter, a spring acting on sald arm, av
roller carried by said arm, and a rigid member havmg an irregularly shaped gulde groove and secured to the door in the path of said roller and serving to retard the expansive action of the spring.
3. .In a door closer, the combination, of a stationary member, a spring actuated arm. rotatively connected to the latter and extending transversely to the door, a grooved guide member for said arm and a lever pivotally secured to the latter member and capable of being swung across the groove of the sameto lock 'thedoor.
4:. In a door closer,-'the combination, of a stationary member, a spring actuated arm rotatively connected -to :the latter and ex tending transversely to the door, a grooved guide member for said arm'and an angular notched lever fulcrumed to saidguide member and capable ofbeing swung across the groove of thelatterto serve as a stop orlock for the door.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
