4 Claims. (Cl. 16-65) This invention relates to door checks of the type used for retaining doors in open, partly open and closed positions and also for closing doors, and in particular a casing mounted on a door frame with an arm extended from the casing and having a pin positioned in a slot of a bracket on a door and in which springs in the casing urge traveling rollers into engagement with notches whereby the door may be retained in the open or partly open position, or may be closed.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a door check with which a door is closed with a slow easy movement and which may also be used to retain a door in an open or partly open position.
Various types of door closing devices and also devices for retaining doors in open positions have been provided. However, in the conventional pressure actuated device it is necessary for a mechanic to set the parts continuously and where such devices are used in localities where servicing is diicult the operation thereof is not successful. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a door check and closer in which the parts are comparatively rugged and wherein it is only necessary to remove a cap and nut to clean or replace parts.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for forming a door closer and stop whereby the stop may be serviced by an unskilled mechanic.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved door closer and stop in which the device is mounted on a door frame with an arm extended therefrom slidably connected to a door hinged in the frame and in which the device may be installed without making changes in the door or frame.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved door closer and stop which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a cylindrical housing having an arm extended from the lower end of a vertically positioned shaft journaled in the housing, a roller on the end of the arm adapted to travel in a slot in a bracket on a door and rollers in the housing resiliently held by a spring in spaced notches of the housing, and wherein the arm is actuated by another spring also positioned in the housing.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevational view showing the upper part of a door with the improved door closer and door stop mounted on the door and frame thereof.
Figure 2 is a vertical section through the housing of the improved door closer and stop with the parts shown in section.
Figure 3 is a sectional plan through the upper part of the housing taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Figure 4 is also a sectional plan through the upper part of the housing taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.

Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved door closer or stop of this invention includes a housing 10, a disc 11 mounted on the upper end of the housing, a collar 12 rotatably mounted on the disc 11, a disc 13 mounted on the lower end of the housing, a shaft 14 positioned in the center of the housing, a cylinder 15 slidably mounted on the shaft 14 and having rollers 16 and 17 journaled in arms 18 and 19, respectively, a spring 20 for urging the rollers against the upper end of the collar 12, a spring 21 for rotating the shaft 14 and an arm 22 carried on the lower end of the shaft and positioned whereby a sleeve 23 on a pin 24 extends through a slot 25 in an angle bar forming a guide bracket 26.
In the design shown the housing 10 is cylindrical and is mounted on a door frame as indicated by the numeral 27 with flanges 28 and 29 which are provided with openings 30 and 31 for receiving screws 32 which secure the housing to the frame.
The lower end of the housing 10 is provided with an annular recess 33 in which a flange 34 of the disc 13 is positioned and the disc is secured in position by screws 35 extended through the lange and threaded into the housing. The disc 13 extends into an annular slot formed by a recess 36 in a disc 37 fixedly mounted on the shaft 14 and a complementary annular recess 38 in the face of a ange 39 which is secured to the shaft 14 with a screw 40. Gaskets 41 and 42 are provided between the disc 13 and disc 37 and flange 39 for sealing the lower end of the housing. The disc 37 is provided with projections 43 in which openings 44 that receive the end of the spring 21 are positioned.
The upper end of the spring 21 is secured in openings 45 of projections 46 which extend downwardly from the disc 11 and a flange 47 on the peripheral edge of the disc is positioned in a recess 48 in the upper end of the housing. The disc 11 is secured in position by screws 49 which extend through the flange 47 and into the housing.
The upper surface of the disc 11 is also provided with an annular recess, as indicated by the numeral 50 and a lip 51 extended from the outer edge of the collar 12 extends into said recess. The collar 12 is secured in adjusted positions by bolts 52 which extend through slots 53 and 54 in a web 55 of the collar, the bolts being threaded into the disc 11.
With the parts arranged in this manner the collar 12 may be set whereby notches 56 in the upper edge of the wall thereof are positioned to stop and hold the door in the full open position or in intermediate positions between the full open and closed positions. The collar 12 may be provided with one set of notches, such as the notches 56 whereby a door may be retained in a full open position and also in a partly open position, upon resetting the collar. The upper end of the wall of the collar is provided with arcuate surfaces as indicated by the numerals 57 and 58 which lead to the notches whereby the door travels with a smooth easy movement.
The rollers 16 and 17 are journaled by pins 59 and 60 in recesses 61 and 62, n the end of the arms 18 and 19 respectively of the cylinder 15 and the spring 201i Vp'ositionedirrtheV cylinderrand held by a nut 63 and washer- 64-urgesthe rollers against the end surface ofA the Wall of the collar 12 whereby the rollers are secured in the notches.
