CHART-LES, S. EVERTS, OF `VVLLIJEhT, NEW YORK.
To all whom #mag/concern:
lBeit known that I, CHARLESS. EvENs, a citizen of the United States, anda` resident of'lValden, county of Grange, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pivoted Tools, of which the following is a specification.` This invention relates to improvements in tools which are pivoted to handles.
The object 4of the invention is to provide means whereby when the tool is open for use 1t 'will be locked to prevent accidental'clos'- ing, yet may be readily unlocked.' `With `this and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and'pointed' out inthe appended claims.
The invention is shown and described as applied "to "a vpocketl knifev although vit isy obvious thatit may be used with other tools.A
Referring to the drawing which formsa part of this application and in which the same reference character indicates the same part in the several views: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a knife in its closed position having the invention applied thereto, one side of the knife at the end to which the blade is pivoted, being cut away to show the improvement. Fig. 2 shows in full lines a knife blade open but not locked. Fig. 3 shows t-he position of the parts when the knife is open and locked against closure. Fig. t is a front edge view of the knife. Fig. 5 is a view of one side of the blade. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the locking member.
The part marked 10 represents the blade and 11 the handle of the knife. This handle is provided with the usual sides 12 and 13 and back spring 14. One of these sides 12 is cut away to more clearly show cert-ain parts of the invention. Pivoted to the inside of the handle on the rivet 14a is a plate or locking member 15 which has an elongated slot or opening 16 through which passes the rivet 17. The free end of this plate or locking member is provided wit-han opening 18 having a lateral recess 19, and through which passes the rivet 20, said rivet also passing through the usual opening 21 in the blade to pivot the blade to the handle. One face of the blade near its point of pivot is provided with a projection or pin v22 which extends in the opening 18 of the locking member. When the blade is closed, as

shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing this pin rests against the surfaceY a of the opening 18 and holds said locking member 15 in the position there shown.
' In opening vthe blade tov the position member to the position shown in full lines l in Fig. 2, this figure' showing the blade open butnot locked. After'the bladei'is fully open, as vthere shown, ltheilocking member is'pressed `at CZ bythe thumb vand moved `oiritspivotlta to tlieposition shown F ig.v 3,' with thepin 22'` inthe recess19'. In 'this position the blade cannot be'closed, as an attempt to do so will cause the pin 22 lto bear againstthe sideneof the recess and Iprevent movement of the blade on its pivot 20.
To unlock the blade so that it may be closed the thumb is pressed against 7 of the locking member, whereupon said member is moved to the position shown by Fig. 2, whereupon the pin 22 is out of the recess 19 and the blade may be moved on its pivot, said pin moving freely in the opening 18.
In the last operation of closing the blade the pin 22 bears against the surface a and automatically moves the plate or locking member to the position shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, I intend that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I desire it also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention, which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the class described, a handle, a pivoted blade having a projection, and a member which is connected to the handle and coperates with said projection in locking the blade in open position, said member having an opening in which the projection travels during the opening and closing movements of the blade and a recess which extends laterally from its opening and receives the projection when the blade is fully open, said recess having a wall arranged to act on the projection to prevent closing movement of the blade and said member being movable relatively to the handle and blade to place its recess into and out of operative relation with the projection.
2. In a device of the class described, a handle, a plate having one end thereof pivoted to the handle and having an opening in the other end thereof and a recess eX- tending from said opening, a blade having an opening therein, a pivot passing through said opening in the plate and blade, and a pin on the blade projecting in the opening and bearing against surfaces of the opening in the plate to move the same on opening and closing the blade, said pin extending into said recess when the blade is open.
3. In a device of the class described, a
handle, a pivoted blade having a projection, and a locking member which is pivoted to the handle, and is provided adjacent to the blade with an opening and a lateral recess from the opening, said opening being so disposed with relation to the projection from the blade that said projection travels in the opening and presses against opposite walls of the latter, to force the locking member outward and inward in the opening and closing movements of the blade, respectively, and said recess being so arranged that it receives the projection when the blade is fully open, and has a wall arranged to engage the projection and thereby prevent closing movement of the blade, the locking member being manually movable in opposite directions to place its recess into and out of operative relation with the projection.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand at Walden, count-y of Orange and State of New York, this 27th day of May, 1910.
CHARLES S. EVENS.
