Description

JOSEPH PENKO, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BEDSTEAID.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 27, 1911.
Application filed August 27, 1910. Serial No. 579,220.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH PENKO, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bedsteads, of which the following is a complete specification.
The main objects of this invent-ion are to provide a reinforced wooden bedstead which is of very light, yet of strong and durable construction; to provide a metal reinforced wooden bedstead which has all of the appearances of a solid wooden bedstead; and
-to provide a wooden bedstead which is capable of taking a high degree of finish, and which is so constructed that the parts may be made of very small dimensions without sacrificing any of the strength.
A specific construction embodied in the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bedstead embodied in this invention. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 22 of Fi 1. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 0 Fig. 1.
In the construction shown, the end posts or legs 1 and the top pieces 2 connecting the upper ends of said posts are formed of any suitable wood, and are channeled in their inner and under sides 3 and 4-, respectively.
Inclosed in the channels are metallic reinforcing bars 5, which are rigidly secured in the channels and act to stiffen or strengthen said posts and top pieces. The cross rails 6 are likewise provided with channels in their upper sides and contain reinforcing bars 7 and the filling rods or panels 8 are each channeled and each contains a reinforcing bar 9. This construction of the head and foot boards permits the wooden members thereof to be constructed of comparatively small or fine dimensions and still provide a very strong and rigid construction.
The side rails 10 are provided with channels in their upper edges in which are reinforcing bars 11 which extend the full length of the rails, and in their under edges the rails are provided with channels in each of which is secured one flange of an angle bar 12. The other flange 13 of said angle bar projects inwardly from the bottom of the side rail and forms the supporting bead for the springs 14.
Obviously a bedstead constructed in accordance with this invention may be made of very light wood, and have all of the appearances of a solid wooden bedstead, and also have a strength equal to a metallic bedstead.
l/Vhile I have shown and described but one specific embodiment of my invention it will be understood that many details of the construction shown may be varied or omitted without departing from the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. A side rail for bedsteads, comprising a rail having a longitudinal channel in its bottom edge, and an angle iron reinforcing bar having one flange embedded in the channel and the other flange projecting inwardly from the bottom of the rail.
2. A side rail for bedsteads, comprising a rail having longitudinal channels in its bottom and top edges, a reinforcing bar embedded in the top channel, and an angle bar secured in the top channel and having one flange projecting inwardly from the bottom of the rail.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH PENKO.
Witnesses:
GEORGE MILLAR, J OSEPH WINTER.
