Description

VIRGIL I. WARREN, 0F ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 20, 1911.
Application led December 20, 1909. Serial No. 534,114.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VIRGIL P. WARREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hinges and the object of the invention is to provide means whereby the door of a refrigerator or the like which is usually provided with a projecting portion overlapping the door frame may be swung clear of such frame immediately'upon opening the door even though such door be opened only to a very slight de- O'ree. b A further and more specic object is to cause the packing material of felt or other substance to be carried away from the door frame in such manner that it will not rub on the surface of the frame and be rapidly worn away.
With these and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel constructions hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application- Figure 1 is a plan view of the device: Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof: Fig. 3 is also an edge view, showing the hinge members at an angle to each other. Fig. 4 is a view showing the hinge secured to a door and door frame.
In carrying out my invention I construct a hinge, one member of which is designed to be attached to the door frame, this member being of the usual construction and designated by the numeral l, while the other member, 2, is deflected at a point adjacent to but slightly removed from its point of connection with the member first mentioned. The member 2 constituting the leaf of the hinge designed to be connected with the door is provided with a portion 3 arranged to be pivotally connected with the member l, with a curved or deflected portion 4 eX- tending from the portion 8, and with a principal portion 5 having the usual apertures 6 for the admission of screws or bolts. The portion 4 is rounded as shown in order to conform to the surface of the door at the edge thereof and the end portion 3 is flat as at 7 and is designed to lie in exactly the same plane as member l, the member 5 when the hinge members are in the same relative position being in a plane parallel with member 1 and removed therefrom a distance corresponding with the thickness of the edge. of the door.
The construction specified causes the hinged edge of the door to be carried away from the door frame a sufficient distance to permit the packing material to clear the door frame upon the initial movement of the door upon its hinges and therefore obviates all wear of such packing.
What I claim is:
A hinge consisting of two members pivotally connected, one of said members comprising a portion 3 arranged to lie in the plane of the adjoining member, said members being adapted to be secured respectively to a door and door frame, a portion projecting outwardly from the portion 3, and adapted to bear against the edge of the door, and a substantially fiat portion eX- tending from the outwardly projecting portion, such portion 3 being disposed on the opposite side of the pivotal point from said adjoining member when the parts are in the position aforesaid.
In testimony whereof I aliiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VIRGIL I. WARREN.
Witnesses:
