Be it known that I, EDWARD T. BENTON,

`Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing useful improvements in detachable heels for boots and shoes. I

The invention has for its object the provision of simple and inexpensive means `whereby the worn outer lifts of a boot or shoe heel may be readily and quickly replaced or renewed by new and perfect lifts. 4 A further object is to provide an improved fastening device for a detachable` heel which is completely concealed from View when in use, which will insure a water tight joint, and which is not exposed to wear or deterioration incident to the use Aof the boot or shoe to which it is attached.

In the accompanying drawing r-f-FigureV 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my irnproved heel, including a portion of a shoe. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view with `the detachable lift. portion removed. Fig. 3 is a top view of the detachable portion. Figs. 4 and 5 are details illustrating the clamping plates. Figs. 6 and 7 are views of slightly modified forms ofl bearing plate and clamp` ing plate respectively. Fig. 8 is a sectional f view illustrating another form of bearing plate. Fig. 9 is a detail view of a locking device for the clamping screw. Fig. 10 is a sectional view of the heel with the clampingy plate reversed.

Referring to the drawing, 10 designates the outer sole of a shoe, 11 the inner sole, andy12 the permanent-ly attached heel portion. The outersole 10 is provided with a recess or depression toV receive a -countersunk plate 13 provided with a central open-` ing coinciding with a slee/ve 14 extending transversely through the lifts forming the heel portion 12. The bottom lift of said heel portion is provided with a recess or chamber to receive a plate 15 which may be secured in position by means of glue 16 as indicated in Fig. 1, or screws 17 as indicated in Fig. 2.- Said plate is provided .with a screws 27. recesses 29 to receive the pins or lugs 20 central opening 19 coinciding with sleeve 14, and av plurality of lugs or pms 20.

The detachable portion 21 is formed of any desirable number of lifts united in the usual way, the number preferably employed being that usually affected in the wear of the shoe.` The innerlift of the detachable portionis provided with a recess 22 to receive a plate 23 provided withA a"l centrall threaded boss 24 adapted to receive the threaded end of a clamping screw 25, the head 26 of which is located in the countersunk 4plate 13 beneath the inner sole 11. It

vwill be noted that the walls'of recess 22 extend slightly 'above the plate 23, whereby the said plate 23 and plate 15 are separated by a space when,.the detachable portin is placed in position and insuring a perfect clamping action. The plate 23 is secured in position by baid plate 23 is provided with whereby the detachable portion 21 is held from rotating relatively to the permanent heel portion 12.

In practlce, when the lifts of the detachableportion 21 become worn it is only necessary to liftA the lining of the shoe and turn screw 25 by means of a small screw driver, until the plate 23 isdisengaged therefrom whereupon a new detachable portion may be readily and quickly substituted therefor. - dealer can furnish an extra set of detachable heel portions with each pair of shoes, thereby practically furnishing the customer with two heels for each pair of shoes.

Having thus explained the nature of my invention and described a manner of constructing and using the same, although with;

out attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made or all of the modes of its use, what I claim iszl. The combination with a shoe having a .heel portion permanently attached thereto, a bearing plate carried thereby and having its outer face in the same plane as the outer face of said heel portion, said plate being provided with a central opening, and a clamping screw extended through said heel portion, of a detachable heel portion comprising la plurality of llfts and having a recess in its upper face, and a clamping plate located in said recess provided with a normally depending central boss for engaging said and a central opening, and a clamping screw extended throughsaid heel'portion, of a detachable heel portion comprising a plurality of lifts, and a clamping plate secured to said detachable portion and provided with a central threaded bossto engage said screw, said clamping plate being reversible to accommodate itself to a detachable portion constructedvof fewer lifts, said boss fitting through the central opening in said bearing plate when the clamping plate is reversed, said clamping plate being provided with 'openings to receive the lugs of said bearing plate in either position of said clamping plate.
