Heels.-Detachable heels of boots and shoes are secured to the boot or shoe heel by a tapered "clutch," and are fastened in place by a screw arranged so as not to be subjected to wear. The invention may be adapted to rubber, leather, metal, or like heels. The clutch consists of a projecting member, which is fixed to, formed in, or fastened in, a recess in the detachable heel-piece, and engages a recessed member on the heel itself, or vice versa. In one form, the projecting member 1 is a flat tongue with undercut edges and tapering in width from the front of the heel. This tongue dovetails with a groove of complementary shape in the heel proper. The tongue may be moulded, cast, or forged in one with the heel-piece, or may consist of a stamped plate embedded in the heel-piece &c., and the groove is preferably lined with a metal piece 4, which is fastened in place by screws 5. The tongue has preferably a portion 8 having a hole through which a screw 9 passes into the heel, or into a hole 6 in a lug 7 in the lining-plate 4. In a modification, a plate, such as is shown in end view in Fig. V, is screwed to the bottom lift of the heel, and the tongue is countersunk into a recess in the heel-piece, which accommodates the plate. This recess may be extended to form a light " military " heel.
