JEROME ARSENAULT AND CHARLES LARRIVEE, OF ST. FLAVIE, QUEBEC, CANADA.
COMBINED BED AND LADDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JEROME ARSENAULT and CHARLES LARRIVEE, both of St. Flavie, in the Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, subjects of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Beds and Ladders, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in a combined bed and ladder, and the objects of our invention are to provide means in the bed by means of which the occupant thereof may escape from the room or the like in which the bed is located, whereby, the one article may serve two purposes, and thus enable the safety of the occupant of rooms in hotels and the like to be insured without any material increase in cost.
The invention consists essentially ofabed having a body portion formed with hinged ladder sections, slotted posts having hinged retaining members holding the ladder sections in folded position and end members fitting over the posts retaining the hinged members in locked position; all as herein after more fully set forth and described in the accompanying specification and drawmgs.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bed with the mattress and springs removed. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same showing the post in section. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the posts. Fig. 4c is a vertical sectional detail showing the method of connecting the posts and end sections. Fig. 5 is a side detail showing two of the hinged ladder sections in extended position.
In the drawings, like characters of refer ence, indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body portion of the bed, substantially rectangular in form, and in accordance with the present invention is formed by a plurality of ladder sections B hinged together and folded in the form of a rectangle twice around the bed, said ladder sections being formed with side members 10, end members 11 and rung members 12, the end members of adjacent sections being hinged together and the rung members being semi-cylindrical in form, whereby, when the sections are Specification of Letters Patent.

folded twice around the bed, the rungs registering with each other will form a complete cylinder, and thus increase the ornamental appearance of the bed.
As illustrated, there are eight ladder sections, two to each side of the bed. The ladder sections are adapted to be retained in folded position by lugs C which have slots 13 into which the corners of the bed portion, including the hinged joint between the sections, are adapted to fit, as shown in Fig. 2, said sections being retained in the slots by hinged retaining members 14 on the edge of the posts, said posts being preferably tubular in form. The retaining members are adapted to be held in position by the head section D and foot section E which have tubular posts which fit over said retaining members and the posts C and hold the former in locked position. The springs of the bed may also be supported by blocks 20 on the retaining members.
In use, when the occupant desires to use the bed as a fire escape or ladder, the end sections are lifted off, which will release the hinged retaining sections let and permit the ladder sections to be unfolded and extended, and they may then be passed out of the window and used as a fire escape or in any other way desirable.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely difierent embodiments of our invention within the scope of the claims constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What we claim as our invention is:
1. A combined bed and ladder comprising a bed having a body portion formed of a plurality of folded ladder sections, posts at the corners of the ladder sections having retaining members fitting insidethe corners of the side sections and end sections of the bed and having tubular posts fitting over the retaining members and the posts which support them.
2. A combined bed and ladder comprising a bed having a body portion formed of a plurality of folded ladder sections, posts at the corners of the ladder sections having hinged retaining members adapted to fit on the inside of the corners, said retaining members being formed with blocks adapted to support the springs of the bed, and means for holding the retaining members in closed position.
3. A combined bed and ladder comprising a bed having a body portion formed with a plurality of folding ladder sections, posts at the corners of the ladder sections having hinged retaining members adapted to fit on the inside of the corners, and means for holding the retaining members in closed position.
4:. A combined bed and ladder comprising a bed having a body portion formed with a plurality of folding ladder sections, posts at the corners of the ladder sections having hinged retaining members adapted to fit on the inside of the corners, and a head and foot for the bed having slots fitting over the posts and holding the retaining members'in closed position.
5. A combined bed and ladder comprising a bed having a body portion formed with a plurality of folded ladder sections folded in rectangular form twice around the bed, said ladder sections being formed with semicylindrical rungs adapted to register with each other and forming cylindrical rungs when registered, and releasable retaining means for holding the ladder sections in folded position.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two witnesses.
