Description

E R. SHEPPARD. CARD CASE FOR FOLDING CARDS.
APPLICATION FILED 11111.27, 1911.

31wento1' ERLE R. SHEPPARD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CARD-CASE FOR FOLDING CARDS.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERLE R. SHEPPARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Card- Cases for Folding Cards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cases which are adapted to receive and retain a card and are provided with retaining devices so constructed that the card may be readily inserted or removed. It is especially designed to be used in holding the identification cards required to be carried by members of the well-known order of Elks and other benevolent and similar associations.
The object of my invention is to provide a light and durable metallic case, which may be used as a watch fob, charm, or
locket, in which the card may be conveniently folded into a Very small compass.
I provide an inn-er structure which is adapted to receive a card of the full regulation size, and in which the retaining devices form folding edges upon which the card may be bent or folded over to approximately the size of one of the sections of the case. 7
In the drawings, which are intended merely for purposes of illustration, the case when folded is approximately one-eighth of the size of the card.
Figure 1 is a plan View of the case in the open position, showing the inner construction and the manner of inserting the card under the retaining devices; Fig. 2 is a per spective view of the same, showing the manner of folding the card; Fig. 8 is an elevation of card case in closed position; and Fig. 4, is a plan view of the inside of the case in open position, showing a modified form of one of the retaining frames.
In my Patent No. 985,071, granted February 21, 1911, I disclosed a card case in which slots were provided upon one side for the insertion of a card, but it was necessary to thread the side edges of the card through these slots, and moreover this construction required the case when extended to be substantially the entire width of the card. In my present invention, the card is merely slipped under long tongues which may have upturned ends for the purpose of more readily receiving the card, and the case may be made as small as desired, and may be placed Specification of Letters Patent.

symmetrically over an intermediate portion of the card. The sides of the tongues form folding edges, over which the card may be folded from opposite sides, while the ends of the tongues form folding edges over which the folded card may be again folded at right angles to the first fold. This construction obviates certain of the objections to my former construction, and greatly facilitates the operation of inserting and folding the card.
The case is formed of two sections, 1, 2, hinged together along their edges as indicated at 3, and at their opposite edges are provided with a clasp or fastening means 41. The blank from which each of the sections is constructed, is bent inwardly to form flanges 6, 6, which abut when the case is closed and entirely inclose the folded card. Secured within each of the sections to the flange along one side is a frame having a wing 8, and a long projecting tongue 9 extending adjacent to the end flange and forming a slot therebetween. The outer ends of the tongues may be bent up, if desired, to facilitate the insertion of a card. The wings 8 are fastened along the top to the flanges, and are preferably set a short distance within the outer edges of the flanges to provide a space within the case between the wings and tongues for the folded card, and slightly spaced also from the inner walls of the sections so that the card may he slid thereunder.
The card 10, is inserted by sliding it under the tongues in the manner shown in Fig. 1, and then folding the projecting right and left hand portions toward the center and over the outer sides of the tongues which constitute folding edges. After the card has thus been folded along the vertical lines as indicated, the lower projecting portion is folded back over the ends of the tongues which serve as folding edges for the horizontal crease. It is evident that the ends of the tongues may have square edges and, if desired, may be extended laterally as shown, for example, at 9' in Fig. 4: to give a more extended folding edge, although I have found the two narrow ends of the tongues sufiicient for the purpose. After the card has been thus folded back entirely within the inclosure of the flanges, the sections of' the case are closed, thus again folding the card along a central vertical line. When it is desired merely to exhibit the card without withdrawing it from the case, as when showing ones credentials upon entering a lodge, the case is unclasped and the card is opened out along the fold lines into the p0 sition shown in Fig. 1. The wings and tongues of the frames do not materially interfere with the disclosure of the matter to be exhibited, while at the same time securely retaining the card in position.
My present invention permits the card to be inserted under the retaining tongues at any intermediate point of the card, although, if desired, one of the tongues may be placed over one corner of the card to extend over one edge thereof, in which case the card would be folded differently.
It will be evident that changes may be made in the construction or arrangement of the retaining frames without departing from the spirit of my invention or from the scope of my claim. Thus the corner braces extending from the tongue to the wings may be of a different shape or may be omitted, and other changes may be made therein.
secured to the flange along the top only of its respective section and having a tongue projecting freely therefrom and extending parallel with and near to the adjacent flange but separated therefrom to form a slot therebetween, whereby a card may be inserted at an intermediate part thereof under said tongue and wing and through said slot, the side edge of said tongue constituting a folding edge over which the card may be folded.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ER-LE R. SHEPPARD.
