This invention relates to billfolds; and has special reference to billfolds having a plurality of pockets therein for receiving bills of currency'and other papers, as well as other articles.
An object of the invention is to provide an im proved billfold having more .than one elongated pocket therein separated by an intervening partition, in combination with novel means for concealing one of the pockets and leaving the remaining pocket or pockets exposed for the convenient insertion and removalof currency bills and other papers, and the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide 'an improved billfol'd embodying a number of l5 pockets, together with means for concealing one `or exposing all of its pockets as desired, and means forming additional pockets for receiving cards, keys, and other papers and articles.
Other objects will appear from the following description, reference being made to the annexed drawings, in whch- Fig. l is an inside view of my improved billfold extended or unfolded.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal diagrammatic sectional View approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig, 3 is a transverse diagrammatic:` sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a transverse diagrammatic sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. 520 Fig. 5 is`a. transverse diagrammatic sectional View on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of a blank vwhich is foldable into proper relationship to cooperate with the other elements to provide a device adjustable to conceal or expose one of the elongated pockets of the billfold, as desired. l
Fig '7 is a plan view of a partition member for dividing the billfold into separate pockets.
Fig. 8 is a plan View of a panelhaving itsv ends 40 extending into longitudinally spaced pockets to cooperate with the inner walls of said pockets and with the partition shown in Fig. '7 to form an elongated pocket in the billfold.
Fig. 9 is a plan View of a sliding ejector used in connection with one of the longitudinally spaced pockets'.
Fig. 10 is a plan view of a strip attached to the exposed wall of one .of the longitudinally spaced pockets and functioning to conceal a slit therein formed to receive the longitudinally extended tonguev 38 shown in connection with the ejector of Fig. 9.
Fig 11 is a plan view of a support insertable in and withdrawable from one of the specially provided pockets and having means in connection therewith for supporting keys or similar objects. Fig. 12 is a fragmentary inside view showing alternate means for connecting some of the parts. vThe completed billfold made in accordance with the present invention includes an elongated 5 outer wall I foldable transversely midway of itsends approximately along the line`4-4 of Fig. 1, which coincides with the line 2 of Fig. 6; a wall 3 of less width than the wall I and integral with one end thereof and having integral with its upper 10 longitudinal edge a wall 4 foldable against the wall 3 along a longitudinalline 5; a relatively narrow wall 6 integral with the lower longitudinal edge of the wall I and foldable against the outer exposed surface of the wall 3 along a longitudinal 15 line 1; a wall 8 integral with .the opposite end of the wall I, of the same width `as the wall 3, and having integral with its upperl edge a wall 9 foldable against the inner surface of the wall 8 along a longitudinal line I8; a tab II integral 20 with the lower edge of the wall I for-engagement with the lower margin of the wall 8; a reinforcing and ornamenting tab I2 integral with the lower edge of the wall I; and a composite curtain and strengthening device integral with the upper edge 25 of the wall I and extending approximately the full length thereof and including attaching end portions I3, a longitudinal attaching portion I4 and a manipulative curtain I5 terminating at the inner edges of the end portion I3.l 30
This blank is folded along the longitudinal lin I6, and the end portions I3 and the longitudinal intermediate portion I4 of the composite curtain are adhesively attached to the inner side of the wall I by glue I'I. The tab I2 is folded against35 the inner surface of the lower margin of the wall I and attached thereto by glue I8 (Fig. 4). The wall 4 is folded against the inner surface of the wall 3 along the line. 5, and the wall 6 is folded against the outer surface of the wall 3 and has 40,
end tabs I8 extended through slits 20 and glued to the inner surface of the wall 3, and extended portions 2| adhesively attached to the outer surface of the wall 3 by glue 22.
The wall 9 is folded downwardly against the45 inner surface of the wall 8 along the line I0, and the wall 8 is folded over toward the wall 3. The tab II has a marginal portion 23 extended through a slit 24 and adhesively attached to the inner surface o f the wall 8 by glue 25a while the 50 exposed portion of the tab II is adhesively attached to the lower marginal portion of the wall 8 by glue 25.
The folding of the billfold blank and the attachment of theparts thereof in the manner 55'.
described provide an incomplete billfold having two spaced inwardly open pockets formed by the walls 3 and 4 and 8 and 9, respectively. The exposed surfaces oi' the walls I, 3. 4 and 6, and of the tab II, may be of uniform finish, or varied. as desired.
A panel 26 has one end extended into the pocket formed by the walls 4 and 8, and is attached to the wall 8 by transverse lines of stitches 21 (Fig. 2), and has its opposite end extending into the pocket formed by the walls 3 and 4 and attached to a strip of flexible and pliable material 28 extending to the outerend of said pocket. The longitudinal marginal edges 29 of the panel 2B are folded against the inner or concealed side of said panel and attached thereto by glue 30. These marginal edges may be skived to avoid undue thickness of material.
A partition 3| is located between the wall I and the walls 4 and 9, and has its lower edge attached to said walls 4 and 9 by longitudinal rows of stitches 32. The ends and upper edge of the partition 3| are unattached to the adjacent parts of the billfold. The said partition 3| is of less length than the length of the curtain, and its upper edge terminates below the line 33, below which the curtain is unattached to the wall I. This permits the curtain I5 to be. extended into the pocket between the wall I and the partition 3|, leaving both pockets open and the upper marginal portion of the partition 3 I above the walls 3 and 8 exposed; or the curtain I5 may be removed from the pocket between the wall I and the partition 3| and extended downwardly at the front of the partition 3| into the pocket formed by said partition and the walls 4 and 9, so as to conceal entirely the said partition 3| and -close the pocket. between said partition and the wall I. The finish of the exposed surface of the curtain l5 is preferably the same as the nish of the exposed surfaces of the walls I, 3 and 8, in order to make complete vconcealment of the partition 3| and the pocket formed between said partition and the wall I of the billfold.
An ejector device for withdrawing cards and the like from the pocket formed between the walls 8 and 9 may be provided. This ejector device comprises a wide exible portion 34 having a narrow extension 35 extending through slits 38 in the wall 9 and'having its end attached to the wall 8 by glue 31. A tongue 38 is attached to the part 34 for extension through a slit 39 in the wall 8, which is concealed by a strip 4II. The strip 4I) hasits ends extended through slits 4I in the wall 8 and is folded to enclose between the folded portions thereof the outer edge of the slit 39, so that, when the tongue 38 is extended through the slit 39, it will slide smoothly and without obstruction.
The pocket formed by the walls 3 and 6 opens upwardly and may be used for various purposes. As shown, the key holder device comprising the wide portion 42 (Figs. 1 and 11) is provided with loops 43 to receive keys or the like 44. The part 42 with the keys 44 monted thereon may be extended into the pocket between the walls 3 and 6, and the extended portion 45 of the part 42 may be folded downwardly and attached to the wall 6 by afastener device 46.v YWhen the fastener device 46 is attached, it is practically impossible to remove the articles from the pocket in which they are mounted, or for such articles to become lost. i
The inner surfaces of the walls 3 and 8 may be covered and protected by thin linings 41 to facilitate insertion of articles into and removal thereof from the pockets of the billfold.
While a particular structure has been shown and described by which the partition 3l is attached to the walls 4 and 9 by longitudinal rows of stitches 32, alternate means for making the attachment is shown in Fig. 12. In this embodiment, the partition 3| informed on each end with an extension or tongue 48, having lateral flaps 49. 'I'he tongues 48 pass through slots 58 in the walls 4 and '9 (the wall 9 only being shown in the drawings), while the flaps 49 serve to keep the parts in proper assembled position.
It should now be apparent that the invention attains all of its intended objects and purposes efliciently, satisfactorily and economically.
I claim:
In a billfold comprising an elongated outer wall, means forming an inner wall for the billfold with its uper edge substantially below the upper edge of said outer wall', anda partition of less length than and located between said outer and inner walls and forming two separate pockets between said walls, and having its upper edge below the upper edge of said outer wall and above the upper edge of said inner wall; a curtain integral with the upper edge of said outer wall extending downwardly and attached to the inner upper margin of the outer wall along a line above the upper edge of said partition and having a length greater than said partition and being extendible into the pocket at either side of said partition, reinforcing attaching portions integral with said curtain beyond the ends thereof and beyond the ends of said 4partition extending downwardly beyond the upper edges of said inner wall and attached to the inner surface of said outer wall beyond the ends of said partition, and
means preventing longitudinal displacement of said partition with respect to said curtain and said reinforcing attaching portions.
