3 Claims. (Cl. 150-39) This invention relates to a wallet and more particularly concerns a wallet having a pocket containing a pass case which is slidable into and out of one end of the wallet while the wallet is folded.

It is an object of this invention to provide a combined wallet and pass case of improved construction. Another object is to provide a combined wallet and pass case including a flexible and foldable anchoring means for limiting the sliding movement of the pass case with respect to the wallet, which anchoring means does not catch or bind and which is permanently secured to the pass case and to the wallet. l

Other objects and advantages of this invention, including the simplicity and economy of the same, will further become apparent hereinafter and in the drawings whereof:

Fig. l represents a view in perspective of a combined wallet and pass case which embodies features of this invention, the wallet being partially folded laterally;

Fig. 2 represents a view similar to Fig. l, with the pass case extended from the end of the wallet, certain parts of the wallet being broken away in order more clearly to illustrate important features of the invention;

Fig. 3 represents a view in elevation of the outer face of the wallet illustrated in Fig. 2, with the pass case inserted into the wallet, certain parts being broken away in order more particularly to illustrate important details;

Figs. 4 and 5 represent sectional views of the wallet, taken as indicated by the lines and arrows IVIV and V-V which appear in Fig. l; and

Fig. 6 represents a partial view, considerably enlarged, of a corner portion of the pass case, illustrating the important details of a guide member which constitutes an important feature of this invention.

Turning now to the specific embodiment of the invention selected for illustration in the drawings, the wallet member includes an outer wall 10 formed integrally with an inner wall 12 and folded longitudinally at 11. As appears more particularly in Fig. 4, the inner wall 12 is folded at 13 over a longitudinally slidable tongue 14. The number 15 designates a divider strip forming within the wallet compartments 16 for bills and the like. It will be appreciated that any desired additional compartments, such as card pockets, etc. may be connected to the inner wall 12 in accordance with conventional practice.

The outer wall 10 is folded over along its top edge 20 forming a narrow strip 21. A liner 22 for one of the bill compartments 16 is glued or otherwise secured to the inside surface of strip 21. Liner 22 extends substantially to the bottom edge 11 of the wallet, and its bottom edge is free. Glued or otherwise aixed to the inner top edge of liner 22 is an anchoring sheet 23 which is substantially co-extensive with the liner 22 and is free at its bottom edge. The anchoring sheet 23 consists of a thin, flexible material such as woven cloth or the like.

Referring particularly to Fig. 2 of the drawings, the anchoring sheet 23 includes an extension 24 which is Io- 2,748,821 Patented June 5, 1956 ICE cated adjacent to the central lateral fold 9 of the wallet. The extension 24 is turned approximately 180 and is glued or otherwise secured to the inner surface of the outer wall 10. The extension 24 extends across the pocket 25 which is formed between the anchoring sheet 23 and the outer wall l0. The number 26 designates the edge of a V-shaped slot which extends through the outer wall 1) at a location spaced inwardly from the free end 27 of the wallet. The slot 26 provides access from outside the wallet to the pocket 25. The end edge 28 of anchoring sheet 23 is aixed to the corresponding end of outer wall 10 (see particularly Fig. 3) beyond the slot 26.

The number 3@ designates comprehensively a pass case which extends through the s lot 26 into the pocket 25, and which is slidable longitudinally into and out of the pocket 25. The pass case 39 includes a stiff or semi-stiff sheet 31 consisting of leather or the like, forming a back for a plurality of transparent envelopes 32, which are intended to contain passes, cards, etc.

Fixed to the inner end of the pass case 30 is a iiexible inelastic thin connecting strip 33 which has an end 34 which is xed to the anchoring sheet 23 at a location which is about midway between the end 27 and the lateral fold 9. Between its ends the width of the connect ing strip 33 is gradually narrowed, forming a V-shaped neck portion 35.

36, 36. Each guide extension 36 has outer edges 37 (see particularly Figs. 2 and 6) which constitute extensions of the corresponding edges of the strip 31. The guide extensions 36 have short, straight ends 40 and curved inner web portions 4l. The extensions 36 are glued or otherwise aiiixed at 42 to the connecting strip 33. It is to be emphasized that the extended length of the connecting strip 33 is so related to the location of the slot 26 that the extensions 36 extend through the slot when the pass case 30 is withdrawn to the limit from the pocket 25. This position, which is illustrated in Fig. 2, provides freedom of swinging movement of the pass case with respect to the wallet, but the guide extensions 36 insure that the pass case will be smoothly and properly reinserted into the pass case pocket 25.

As the pass case 30 is inserted into the pocket 25, the restricted neck portion 35 of the connecting strip 33 buckles cleanly and collapses in such a manner that binding or undue friction are eliminated even when the pass case 30 is inserted quickly into the pocket 25. The extension 24 serves as a stop limiting the extent to which the pass case may be inserted into the pocket 25, and also serves as a guide around which the extensions 36 are curved at the time the insertion of the pass case is cornpleted. The position of the extensions 36 when the pass case is completely inserted into the pocket 25 is illustrated more particularly in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The extension 24 stops the pass case 30 before any substantial tension is applied to the connecting strip 33, thereby protecting the adhesive or other connection between the end 34 and the anchoring sheet 23.

Accordingly, it will be appreciated that a novel yet relatively simple and inexpensive means has been provided for anchoring the pass case with respect to the wallet, for guiding the longitudinal sliding movement of the pass case with respect to the wallet, and permitting freedom of swinging movement of the pass case with respect to the wallet when the pass case is withdrawn from the wallet. In addition, the sliding movement of the pass case with respect to the wallet is not hindered by any binding or frictional eifects of the anchoring means or of the guiding means.

Although this invention has been described in specific terms with reference to one specific embodiment thereof, it will be appreciated that various modifications may be made, including the substitution of equivalent elements for those shown rin the drawings, the reversal of parts, and the use of certain features independently of the use of other features, all within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. A wallet comprising generally rectangular inner and outer walls which are foldable to form a pair of contiguous wallet portions, a pass case, means in one of said wallet portions comprising a pocket forming wall attached to said outer wall forming a pocket for the pass case, said outer wall having an opening adjacent its end providing access of said pass case to said pass case pocket, a collapsible connecting piece of flexible inelastic rnaterial xed to said pass case and to said pocket forming wall and anchoring said pass case with respect to said wallet, said collapsible connecting piece being gradually narrowed between its ends forming a narrowed neck portion, and guide extensions carried by said pass case and extending into said pocket when said pass case is withdrawn from said wallet and said connecting piece is extended to the limit, thereby guiding the pass case for subsequent reinserion into said pocket.

2. A wallet comprising generally rectangular inner and outer walls which are foldable to form a pair of contiguous wallet portions, a pass case, means in one of said wallet portions comprising a pocket forming wall attached to said outer wall forming a pocket for the pass case, said outer wall having an opening adjacent its end providing access of said pass case to said pass case pocket, a collapsible connecting piece of flexible inelastic material fixed to said pass ease and to said pocket forming Wall and anchoring said pass case with respect to said wallet,

and guide extensions carried by said pass case and extending into said pocket when said pass case is withdrawn from said wallet and said connecting piece is extended to the limit, thereby guiding the pass case for subsequent reinsertion into said pocket, said guide extensions having substantially straight side edges which are substantially aligned with the sides of the pass case, and said extensions having substantially straight ends and curved inner web portions which extend from said ends inwardly to the body of the pass case.

3. A wallet comprising generally rectangular inner and outer walls which are secured to one another and foldable along a lateral fold to form a pair of contiguous wallet portions each having a free end, means in one of said wallet portions forming a pocket having an access opening adjacent the free end of said wallet portion, means forming an anchoring wall within said pocket which is parallel to and substantially coextensive with said outer wall of said wallet portion, said anchoring wall having one end which is secured relative to said outer wall adjacent said access opening and having an opposite end which bridges across said pocket adjacent said lateral fold and is secured to the inner surface of said outer wall, an insert which is slidable longitudinally into and out of said pocket, and a collapsible connecting strip fixed to one end of said insert and also fixed to said anchoring wall approximately midway longitudinally between said access opening and said lateral fold.
