To all whom it: may concern:

Be it known that l, ARTHUR L. Kinse- BURY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Northampton, in the county of Hampshire, Stete of Massachusetts, have inventeda certain new and useful Tmprovenient in Boxes for Containing Spool-Silk and the Like, of which the following is s specification, reference being hsd therein to the accompanying drawings.

Spool silk for sewing purposes and the like is put up for the market in small pasteboerd boxes, each of the letter containing at certain number of spools, all having wound thereon silk. of the some color or shade and size, The form of box which at the present time is in demend for the purpose of conteining the said silk consists of a body or trey and a cover which incloses and conceals or practically conceels the bon body or trey. The color and shade of the silk which is contained in n box of this character hsve been indicated upon the cover by the Home and number, or name alone, of such color shade, printed thereon, and in the case of block silks the size hes been indicated in addition by a letter denoting the size. The box-body hes not been rnorked. A general object of the invention is to eliminate liability to mistakes and errors of the kind just mentioned.

The invention consists in it box of the character aforesaid, having the box-body suitably marked to identify the contents upon the exterior of the flange or upright Well thereof, and having e portion of the cover removed to expose the marking when the cover is in-plnce.

in the case of s box. embodying the invention, the absence of the cover makes no difference with respect to the identification of the contents. The cover rny be left unmarked, snd preferably will, in which case one cover will answer its Well as another.

The invention eliminates the troubles which heretofore have been experienced.

It will be clear from Figs. 1 and 2 that the exact character of the contents of the box is unmistakably denoted in both the uncovered state thereof and the covered state.

The invention is not necessarily confined in its application to boxes for containing spool silk, but may be applied to boxes for holding other classes of goods, nor is it limited to application in connection with boxes of the particular construction shown herein.

' I claim'as my invention 1. The improved box for containing spoolsilk, and ,the like, comprising the boxbody or tray formed with continuous unperfo;

rated upright sides completely inclosing the contents, and having one of the said sides marked or printed to designate the character of the said contents, and a removable cover formed with depending flanges which inclose and conceal the said sides of the boxbody or tray, and having in one thereof an opening or window through which the imprint or marking is visible when the cover is in place, without exposure of the contents of the box to light or dust.

2. The improved box comprising the boxbody or tray formed with continuous unperforated upright inclosing sides and having one of the latter marked or printed to denote the character of the contents, and the removable cover formed with depending-flanges when the cover is in place, without exposure of the contents of the box to light or dust, and also having adjacent the said opening or window the narrow marginal strip securing an unbroken lower edge for the said portion of the cover.

3. The improved box comprising a boxbody or tray formed with continuous unperforated upright sides and provided upon opposite ones thereof, and at places diagonally opposite with respect to each other, with imprints or markings by which the character of the contents is identified, and the removable cover formed with depending flanges inclosing the box-body and substantially concealing its said sides, and having its end-flanges formed with openings or windows diagonally opposite to each other through which the said markings upon the sides of the box-body or tray are visible when the cover is in place, without exposure .of the contents of the box to light or dust.
