SEALING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 313, 119115.
Application led May 29, 1913. Serial No. 770,610.
7b all whom t may Concern:
e it known that we, FRAN cis WARE CLARY and CARL H. Bissau., of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Sealing Device, of which the following is a specification.
In shipping merchandise, the boxes or packages each frequently contain several of the articles of merchandise as one-half, or oneI dozen of 'said articles, and indistributing this merchandise the dealer oftentimes opens the box and sells one of the articles and then inadvertently sells the same box as a full box to claims a shortage against the dealer, and,
.consequently the dealer claims a shortage against the manufacturer.
This invention has for its object a sealing device by which the dealer and the buyer can readily see that a box is intact or as received from the manufacturer, and the invention consists in the novel features of construction hercinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is an isometric view of a box embodying our invention, said box having a displaceable part, as a cover, for exposing the contents of the box. Figs. 2 and 3 are fragmentary views illustrating the sealing device when partly broken and completely breken, respectively. 'Fig 4 is an enlarged sectional view through the seal and contiguous portion of the box. Fig 5 is a plan of a slightly modified form, of the sealing device.
This sealing device comprises a strip having flaps designed to be secured to the adjoining sides of the box at opposite sides of a displaceable edge thereof, and a seal breaker extending transversely of the strip and also in a direction lengthwise of one of the {laps of said strip.
l designates the iaps designed to be secured as by an adhesive to the adjoining sides of a box 2 at opposite sides of a disanother customer, whoV placeable edge of said box,l and 3 is the seal breaker which may be a cord or lwire permanently secured to the strip with the portion 4 thereof extending transversely of the strip at the line of union of the fiaps 1 and in advance of and near said displaceable edge and another portion extending in a direction lengthwise of one of the aps, the latter portion extending Vfrom one end of the transverse portion 4 diagonally of said one of the flaps and having its end 5 projecting beyond one of the corners at the end of said flap. The seal breaker 3 may be secured to the strip by the adhesive or may be interlacedfin the strip as shown in Fig. 5.
In use, afterthe box has been closed, the seal is placed in position with the portion 4 of the cord along the line at which the box opens, this line being usually at a corner,
'although it may be between the yside edges (rf any side of the box; As the breaker 3 is permanently secured to the strip the portion having the projecting end 5 will always have a position extending lengthwise or diagonally of one of the flaps l. To open the box the dealer or the buyer takes. hold of the projecting end 5 of the cord and pulls on the same destroying the seal, as indicated at 2, 3. The flaps 1 preferably bear the trade-mark of the manufacturer so that a dishonest dealer cannot replace a broken seal with one of his own.
What we claim is:
The combination with a box having a displaceable part for exposing the contents of the box, of a sealing strip extending across a displaceable edge of the displaceable part and having a section secured to the displaceable part at one side o f said edge, and another section secured to the box on the other side of said edge, and a strand having a part extending transversely across the under side of the strip and located in advanceof and near said displaceable edge, and another portion of the strand extending from said displaceable edge diagonally across one of the sections of the strip with an end of tle strand exposed at a corner of said one ofthe seoti ons ofthe strip, whereby by pulling on said end of the strand the strip will be severed diagonally and transversely'along the length of the strand, substantially as and for the purpose described. e
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto signed our names in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse,'the county of FRANCIS WARE CLARY. CARL H. RISSRLL.
Witnesses:
C. C. ScHoENEoK, WM. CORNELL BLANDING.
