DUMPING-CAR.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON BECKER, oi* Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have' invented certain new and useful lfnmrovements in Dumping- Cars; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suoli as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the same.
rllhis invention relates to improvements in dumping' cars,.onc object of the invention being to provide a: simple and ctlicient structure which can be converted from a gondola to a hopper bottom car and vice versa. f i
A further object is to construct the car in such manner that the hopper bottom shall be so divided longitudinally as to form two triangular hoppers at respective Sides of the center girder, and to provide means located parallel with the center girder for. operating the hopper doors.
A further object is tov so construct a car having a centrally located hopper, as to provide connecting .means between the holsters in line with the drait sills and secured to the latter.
A t'urther object is to provide simple and ellicient means for mounting and manipulating the floor sections and side doors ot a convertible dumping car.
lWith these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations ot parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed ont in the claims.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a= transverse sectional View, one half oi which shows the arrangement of parts for a gondola car and the other half showing the arrangement for a hopper bottom ear. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the oar showing the center girder in Side elevation and the floor sections elevated when the hopper bottoni -is tobe used, for central discharge purposes. Fig. 3 is a plan view partly in section with the parts in position to iorm a hopper bottom car. Fig, 4t is a side elevation. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view, partly in section, at one corner of the car structure. At the center of the canali inverted U- shaped cross-bearer Li is located and comprises two members at respective sides of the center girder and secured at their inner ends to the latter,-the outer ends ofthe members of the U-shapcd cross-bearer being secured to side sills 5. Each of these side sills is of the plate girder type and provided at the upper edge with an angle bar 6, the
. upper flange of which projects inwardly approsimatel)T in line with the top of the cross-bearer 4. The lower edge ot' each side sill has secured thereto, two angle-bars 7, the lower flanges of which constitute the base of Athe side sill.
To the outer faces otl each member of the U-shaped crossbearer et, angle-bars 8 are secured and inclined downwardly and inwardly from the upper edges of the side sills and terminate an appreciable distanceA from the bottom ot' the center girder. To these inclined angle-bars 8, the inclined hopper plates 9 are secured and at the lower` edges ot these hopper plates, angle-bars 10 are located'. Hopper doors ll are hinged attheir upper edges to the bars l() at the lower edges ot the hopper plates 9 and serve to close the-outlets of the hopper between the lower edges of the hopper plates and the bott'oin ot' the center girder. l
Transverse angle-bars ,12 are secured to the inner faces of the respective members of the r-shaped cross-bearer 4 at the lower edges thereof and these angle-bars extend from one sidesill to the other and under the center gilden-the respective ends of the transverse oar l2 being secured to the angle-oars 7 which constitute'. the bases` of the side sills. The outer ends of the hopper plates 9 are secured to the inclined edges of the hopper ends 14 and the ends of the center girder are inclined in conformit with the inclination of the hopper ends. plate 15 is secured to the base angles 3 of the center girder and extends upwardly along the inclined ends of said girder and is secured to the latter by means of angle-bars 16. To
this plate the inner side edges of the hopper ends 14e are secured and4 said plate also affords'means for securing draft sills 17 to the center girder. To assist in sustaining the side hopper plates 9 between the crossbearer t and the hopper ends, triangular.- braces 18 are disposed between said hopper plates Sand the side sills 5, as clearly shown in Fig; 1. Each car bolster 19 comprises parallel diaphragms 2O at respective sides of the draft sills 17 and secured to said sills; a compression member 21 securedto the lower flanges of said diaphragm, and a tension member secured to the top flanges of Vsaid diaphragms,-said tension member in the present instance consisting of a tloor plate 22 which extends from the end of the car *tor the end of the hopper, as shown in Fig. 2. Between the draft sills 17 and in line with the space between the bolster diaphragms, a bracket 23 is secured and provided with a socket for a king pin.
From the above construction it will be observed that the hopper is centrally located; that the center girder passes through the longitudinal center of the hopper and in line with the draft sills, and that said hopper is divided by the center girder and the centrally located cross-bearer, into four smaller hoppers, each of triangular form and each provided with a door 1l for (3o/n1] trolling the discharge of the contents of said hoppers.
At each end of the hopper bottin, brackets Zlare located and to these/brackets floor sections 25 are hinged and of sutlicient length to extend from the hopper bottom to the ends ofthe carstructure or approximately to said ends-,said ioor sections 25 being provided on their rear orunder faces with angle-bars 26 which rest upon the floor plates 22 when said bottom sections 25 are disposed in a horizontal position to form portions' of the bottom of a gondola car. lVhe'n the floor sections 25 are in vertical positions, as shown in full lines in Fig. 2, they will constitute the ends of the upper portion of the hopper,-tl1e sides of said upper or body portion of the hopper' car being formed by doors 27, as hereinafter explained, 'lhedoors` above referred to are more properly speaking, floor sections kand .are hinged. at. their outer edges to the side sill members. `These floor sections 27 are rprovided on their inner or under faces with channel lirons 28 and. are adapted to cover the hopper' bottom as shown in Fig.

The upper ends of the side stakes at respective sides of the car are connected by continuous angle-beams 31. Between the stakes 2S), side doors 32 are hinged or pivotally connected at their upper ends to said stakes in proximity to the upper connecting beam 31 and the flanges of said stakes constitute stops to limit the inward movement-of the hinged side doors. Each side door is braced by means of channel bars 33 extending from the upper to the lower end thereof and all of the side doors 32 at each side of the car may be connected together by means of angle-beams 34 secured at the lower edges of said doors-said angle-beams being'bent outwardly as shown at 35, Fig. 6, to avoid' conflict with the side stakes.

where the latter passes through the central U-shaped cross-bearer 4. Any suitable means may be provided for locking the shaft 3S and it is apparent that when this shaft is unlocked, the side doors will be free to swing outwardly,
lVl1en the car is to be of the hopper bottomtype, the floor sections 27 will be raised to vertical position shown atg'theright hand side of Fig. .l and will be held in such position by suitable clamps or hooks 40 attached to the upper angle beams 3l which connect the upper ends of the stakcsf-,said floor sections being then disposed parallel with the hinged side doors and constituting the side walls of the body portion of the hopper car, the end walls being formed by the floor sections 25 when the latter are raised to vertical position, as. shown in Fig. 2. For the end loor sections 25, stops 41 are provided, as shown in Fig. 5.
Brackets 42 depend from the bottom of the center girder and in these brackets, a shaft 43 is mounted so as to be disposed immediately under said center girder. 'lhe hopper doors 1l are provided at their free ends with depending arms 44 and to the free ends of these arms chains 4-5 are attached. These chains are wound on the shaft 43, so that when said shaft is rotated, the doors at both sides of the center girder will be operated simultaneously. 'ihc shaft 43 is provided with a worm wheel (lli, with which a worm 47'. meshes,--said worm being secured to a transverse shaft 48 mounted in suitable hangers '49 and 50 and provided at its end beyond 'one of the side sills of the car with an angular portion 5l for, the reception of' a suitable operating device.
Any` suitable means may be provided for normally locking the shaft 48 against rotation when the hopper doors are-closed. It is apparent that when the shaft 48 is unlocked, thehopper doors will open by reason of the weight of material thereon and that by rotating said shaft to cause the chains 45 to be wound will be closed.
Having fully described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,--
1. In a dumping car, the combination with',
side sills, a center garder provided with inclined ends, and a centrally located crossbearer, ot hopper plates, each secured at one y end to the cross-bearer, hopper ends secured to the other ends of said hopper plates at respective sides of the center girder, a plate secured to the bottom of the center girder and extending along the inclined ends thereof, and draft sills secured'to said plate.
2: In a dumping car, the combination with car sides and a center sill, of an inverted U -shaped cross-bearer secured to said car sides and center girder, hopper plates. secured to said cross-bearer, hopper ends secured to the hopper plates and connected with the center girder, and transverse anglebars secured to the inner fac-es of the U- shaped cross-bearer at the lower edges thereof, said transverse angle-bars extending from one car -side to the other and underl the center girder and secured to the bottoms of sind car sides and center girder.
3. ln a dumping car, the combination with car sides, a center girder, and a centrally located cross-bearer secured to said car sides and center girdcr,` hopper plates secured to the cross-bearer, hopper ends secured to the hopper plates and connected with the center irder, and brackets or braces disposed-hetween the hopper plates and the car sides on the shaft 48, the hopper doors intermediate of the cross-bearer and hopper ends.
4. In a dumping car, the combination withv framework and side stakes secured thereto, of side doors hinged at their upper ends between said side stakes, angle-beams secured to the lower edges of the doors and connecting said doors, and means connected with said angle-beams for closing the doors and maintaining them closed.
5. In a dumping car, the combination with side sills and transverse members, ot side stakes secured to the side sills, side doors hinged at their upper ends between the side stakes, means for .operating said shafts, and chains wound on said shafts, passing through the side sills and connected with said side doors.`
6. In a dumping car, the combination with side sills and transverse members, of flanged. side stakes secured to the side sills, side doors hinged at their upper ends between said stakes, the flanges ot said stakes constituting stops to limit the inward movement of said doors, a door operating shaft, angle bars secured to the lower edges of the doors,

In a dumping car, the combination with a frame and a hopper bottom, of side stakes securedrto the same, an angle-beam connecting the upper ends of the side stakes at each side of the car, side doors hinged at their upper ends between` the side stakes, means for closing said doors and maintaining them closed, hinged iioor plates adapted to cover the hopper bottom, and clamps attached to the angle-beams at the tops ot theA side stakes for engaging said ioor sections to hold the same in upright positions.
