ARGYLE CAMPBELL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T0 ENTERPRISE RAILWAY EQUIPMENT COMPANY, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
DUMP-CAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Applicationv filed March 20, 1 913. Serial No. 755,590.
T0 nl? whom, il may concern:
Be it. known that l, AuovLu CAMPBELL, a citizen ot the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have. invented a new and useful lmprovement in Dump-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements iu dump cars, and more particularly to the center sill construction of such cars.
n object of the invention is to provide a dump car, the center sill construction of the underframe ot which is cheap to manufacture, strong, well adapted to withstand huiting strains, and which is so constructed that `practically uo part of. the load will remain infthe ear above the center sill when the load is dumped.
Another object of the invention is to provide a dump ear having a box-like center sill disposed below the normal floor level 'of the car, the upper portion of the sill be ing formed by a rolled plate member of a substantially inverted V shape, having a narrow, Hat upper portion to which is attached a longitudinally extendingT floor plate.
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements in the parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown, described or claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a cross sectional view of an interchangeable general service and hopper car embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is an enlarged, detail sectional "vie-w. of the center sill construction shown in Fig. 1, andf Fig. v3 is a sectional view of another form of center sill embody,- ing my invent-ion. i
In the drawing, the interchangeable .general service and hopper ear` is shown as having an end 10, sides 11, hoppers 12, center sill A (more particulgrly hereinafter described), hinged side ump door doors 13,
-' the same being hinged closely together near the longitudinal center'of the car approximately at the floor level, and door operating mechanism including longitudinally eX- tending shafts 14 and chains 15. Each floor door 13 is detachably hinged at its inner-"end as at 16, shown in the right hand part ofl Fig. 1, said doors being' adapted to be dropped to a positionto form the bottom of a hopper,as shown at 13a on the left hand portion of Fig. 1, the lower ends of the door being supported on suitable hinge butts 17, the'latter in turn being fixed`to brackets 18 secured to the end hopper sheets 19. Each hopper l2 is also provided with a lower, hinged, center dump hopper door 20, operated by mechanism including a longitudinally extending shaft 21 and chains 22, said doors 20 being pivoted to the under side of the center sill construction. The interchangeable features of the hopper car above described form no part of this invention, the same being shown, described and claimed in ,the patent issued to me, No. 1,054,087, dated Feb. 25, 1913. I
The center sill construction A, shown in Fig. 1, comprises two lower, longitudinally extending members 23, the same being in the form of channels having their flanges turned inwardly, and secured to the tops of thechannels is a longitudinallyv extending plate 24, the latter being of substantially inverted V'shape, and having an upper, relatively narrowfiat, horizontal portion 25, to which is secured a somewhat wider, longitudinally extending floor plate 26. The lower edges 2 of the plate 24 are secured to the outer faces of the channels 23 by rivets or other suitable means, as shown in Fig. 2.
With the construction above described, it. will be seen that the floor dump doors of the car may be hinged quite closely together, as shown in Fig. 1, the hinge connections being located between the sloping sides of the plate 24 and the horizontal tioor plate 26, and being protected by the latter. By making the plate 24 in the form as shown and described, I am enabled to do away with any'Ts, Is or angles above the channels, such as have hitherto been used in order to narrow the upper portion of the center sill construction to bring the hinge points of the ioor doors together, and by forming the plate 24 with the narrow, fiat portion 25, I provide a substantial support to which the oor plate 21 may readily be attached.
In Fig. 3, the center sill construction is shown as formed of a pair of outwardly turned channels 23a and an upper, substantially inverted V-shaped plate 24a, the latter having. a relatively narrow, horizontal, flat portion 25, and having its lower edge por# tions 27a outwardly extended and secured to vthe top flanges et the channels 23a, the longitudinally extending Hoor plate 2Ga bein g secured to the upper portion ofthe cenp ter sill construction similar to the arrange# ment shown in Figs. 1 and 2,
1. In a car of the character described, in combination a car body having floor door openings; side-dump Hoor doors hinged at their inner, longitudinal edges for said door openings; and an underframe including a center sill having longitudinally extending, spaced, vertical lower port-ions and an inverted, V-shaped, upper portion, all substantially below the floor level, said V-shaped upper portion having also a flat integral top to which a floor plate may be secured,
whereby the doors may be hinged closely together near the longitudinal center of the car approximately at the ioor level, substantially asspecified. v
2. In a car of the character described, in combination: a car body having floor door openings; side-dump ioor doors hinged at their inner, longitudinal edges; and an undei-frame includingya center sill comprising lower, longitudinally extending, spaced channels and an inverted, V-shaped upper rolled plate, said channels and plate being disposed substantially below the iioor level, whereby the floor doors may be hinged closely together near the longitudinal center` of the car and approximately -at the floor level, substantially as specified.
3. A car of the character described, including, in combination: a car body provided with a side dump lioor door hinged at its inner, longitudinal edge; and an underframe, including a center sill, comprising a pair of longitudinally extending, spaced channels having a substantially inverted V-shaped plate secured to the tops thereof, said plate having a relatively narrow, flat, horizontal top portion to which is secured a longitudinally extending floor plate, substantially as specified In testimony whereof, I have hereunto 45 signed myname in the presence of two subscribmg witnesses..
