Be it known that I, ARGYLE CAMPBELL a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Divertible Ballast- Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This inventionrelates to improvements in divertible ballast cars.
Objects of the invention are to'provide a hopper car more particularly adapted for use as a ballast car and wherein the loadcarrying capacity of the car is increased as compared with former constructions; the amount of material employed is decreased as also the cost of fabrication; and wherein the dumping of all the ballast between the rails, when the car is employed for center dumping, is insured, the present invention being in the nature 0f an improvement upon my prior Patent No. 1,174,677 of March 7, 1916.

Figs. 3 and 3a represent a broken sectional view at the ends of the hopper section t0 more clearly illustrate the operating mechanism for the Center dumping doors. Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of a portion of the car at one end of the hopper section. And@ Fig. 5 is a partial side elevational view of a portion of the car opposite one of the diaphragrns between two of the hoppers.
center sill 10 which is preferably in the form of an I-beam to thereby obtain a center sill of minimum width consistent with the necessary strength and the purpose of which will more clearly appear hereinafter. In addition to the center sill 10, the car is provided with side walls 11-11, side stakes 12-12 and pressed channelshaped diaphragm members 13.
Each of the hoppers hasa downwardly and inwardly inclined hopper bottom sheet 14; a downwardly and outwardly inclined hopper bottom `sheet 15, the latter being secured at their upper edges to the web of the I-beam 10 and beneath the upper ianges thereof, as indicated at 16; end hopper sheets 17, the latter being secured near the middle of the channel diaphragme 13 so that the latter are employed to form portions of the hoppers and thus save material; a side dumping hopper door 18 hinged along its upper edge, as indicated at 19, to the under side of the hopper sheet 14; anda center dumping hopper ldoor 20 hinged along its upper edge, as indicated at 21, to the lower under side ofthe hopper sheet 15. Each set of hopper doors 18 and 2O is provided with meeting flanges 22 and 23 at the bottom edges of the doors and beneath the meeting edges of the doors is disposed a longitudinally extending divertingpartition 24 which is preferably in the form of an angle, the angle Q4 being carried by suitable brackets 25 attached to the end hopper diaphragm members 17. The hopper bottom sheets 14 and 15 are suitably braced at their bottom edges'as by angles 26S-26, the bottom edges of the `hopper doors by Z-bars E27-27 and the upper edges of the hopper doors by angles 28-28- As clearly appears from Fig. 1, the meeting edges of the doors of the hoppers are located in a vertical plane 'are vdisposed entirely below the diaphragm members so that it is unnecessary to slot or cut the diaphragm members, thus saving considerable labor in the manufacture of the car. From each of the shafts 30 extend a plurality of connections for the hopper. doors, there being one moreset of con nections than there are number of center dumping doors on each side of the car, that isthere will be connections from the shaft 30 at each end of the hopper section and connections between each pair of center dumping doors. Each of these connections includes a hook-shaped link 32 pivotally connected Vto the hopper door, as indicated at 33; a short link 34;. an additional link 35, the link35 being `pivotally connected,las indicated at 36, to an arm 37 carried by a drum rigidly secured. to the shat't 30.A The connections above described are of a well known formandare. so arranged that when the doors are in closed position, tendency to rotate the'shaft 30 in an unwinding direction iseliminated.V Atene end of the hopper sect-ion, as shown most clearly in Figs.
' 3 and 3a, the shafts 30-30 are provided with worm v gears mounted in housings 38, the worm gears meshing with worms mounted in housings 39, the Vworms being carried by a transverse operating shaft 40 which is eX* tended to one side of the car, as shown most clearly in Figs. 3 and4. At its end, the shaft 40 is provided with the usual ratchet wheel 42, squared end 43 by` which it can be turned, and coperating with the ratchet wheel 42 is a pawl 44 and aI locking dog 45. As will be apparent, the worm and worm gear connection between the shaft 40 and shafts 30--30 will automatically lock the shafts 30 in any desired position so that the degree of opening of the center dumping doors 20can be adjusted and maintained as desired, both sets of doors 20 being operated simultaneouslyV and uniformly. Each set or' side dumping doors 18 is operated independently and for that purpose l providethe following mechanism: Secured to the lower flanges of the center sill l0 at theends ofthe hopper section and intermediate each pair of hoppers, are depending Vhanger brackets 46 `each. otvwhich is provided with a pair of` bearings 47'--47.
Mounted in said bearings are two longitudinally extending operating shafts 48-48, one for one setof s ide,dumpingdoorsand the other for the opposite -set'ot side dumping doors.' Although I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred manner of carrying out my invention, the same is merely illustrative, and I contemplate all changes and modifications that come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In a car ofthe character described, the combination with a car body having a single center sill and longitudinally arranged sets of hoppers on each side of the center sill, of
hinged center dump hopper doors for each set of hoppers; longitudinally extending operating shafts for said doors arranged on the outer sides of said hoppers; side dumping hopper doors for each set of hoppers; and longitudinally arranged operating shafts for the side dumping doors located between the hoppers.
2. In a car of the character described, the combination with a car body having an I- beam center sill and longitudinally arranged sets of hoppers on each side thereof, each of said hoppers including a downwardly and outwardly inclined hopper bottom sheet secured to the web of said center sill; of side dumping hopper doors for said hoppers; center dumping hopper doors for said hoppers; mechanism for operating the center dumping hopper doors of both sets of hoppers simultaneously; and mechanism for operating the sets of side dumping hopper doors independently.
3. In a car of the character described, the combination with a car body having longitudinally arranged sets of hoppers on each side of the center sill thereof; each hopper of each set having a pivoted side dumping door and a pivoted center dumping door, the side and center dumping doors of each hopper having meeting edges located in a vertical plane inside of the car rails; of mechanism for operating said doors; and longitudinally extending diverting partitions disposed beneath the meeting edges of the doors of each set of hoppers, each diverting partition comprising an angle iron with the flanges thereof inclined downwardly.
l. In a car of the character described, the combination with a car body having longitudinally arranged sets of hoppers on each side of the center sill, the center sill comprising a single beam; of pivoted side dumping doors for said hoppers; pivoted center dumping doors for said hoppers; mechanism for operating the center dumping doors including longitudinally extending shafts disposed on the outer sides of the hoppers; and mechanism for operating the side dumping doors including a pair of longitudinally extending shafts mounted below said center sill.
5. In a car of the character described, the combination with a car body having a center sill and diaphragm members, the car body being provided with sets of longitudinally arranged hoppers on each side of the center sill, each hopper having a side dumping door and a center dumping door; of mechanism for operating all of said doors, said mechanism including four longitudinally arranged shafts, all of said shafts being located below the diaphragms and two of them between the hoppers and beneath the center sill.
6. In a car of the character described, the combination with a car body having an I- beam center sill and longitudinally arranged sets of hoppers on each side of the sill; of pivoted side dumping hopper doors; mechanism for operating said side dumping doors, including a pair of longitudinally arranged Y operating shafts, brackets secured to the under face of said center sill and in which said shafts are mounted; center dumping doors for said hoppers; and mechanism for operating the center dumping doors simultaneously, said mechanism including a pair of longitudinally arranged shafts located on Y the outer side of said hoppers.
