To all whom it may concern:
l 3e it known that I, ARGYLE CAMPBELL, a citlzen of the United States, residing in Cl1icago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hopper Dump-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hopper dump cars.
The object of my invention is to provide a hopper car with inside dump, which will be of astrong, simple, eflicient and durable construction, composed of few parts and capable of being'chcaply manufactured.
The invention consists in the means employed to accomplish this object or result as herein shown and described, and particularly specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a .part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved dumpcar, one-half the length of the car body being omitted to enable the construction to be shown on a larger scale and more distinctly. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is an end elevation, partly in cross section, on lines 33 and 3*--3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section on line 4:4 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 5 is a detail side elevation looking in the direction of the arrow marked 5 in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detail plan view of the winding drum and connecting links. 'Fig. 7 is a detail elevation of same and Fig. 8 is a detail front or edge view of same.
In the drawing, 1 represents the body of 'my dump car, 2 the upright side sheets of the car body, secured to the upright posts or frame members 3, 4 the'side" hopper sheets, 5, 6'the inclined end floor sheets, 7 central longitudinal inside hopper sheets and 8 the center sills of the car body.
The hopper bottom of the car body is 1 provided with a plurality of door openings 9, the same being separated at their ends by the transverse hopper sheets 10 and closed by the doors 11, which are connected by hinges 12 at their upper inner edges 13 to the hinge butts or brackets 14 which are secured to the center sills 81.
15 are the door operatingshafts, extending longitudinally of the car, one on each side and near the outer edge, thesame being journaled in suitable bearings on the brackets 16, which are secured to and below the side hopper sheets 4. Each of the operating locking shoulder 22, and one of the connecting links, preferably the middle one, is also provided with a corres onding and 006perating shouldered locking face 23. The link 21, which is pivoted at one end to the door, is preferably furnished with a right angle bend 24:, so that the short link 20, which is provided'with a locking shoulder or face 23, may engage-the drum when the door is closed centrally and directly opposite the axis of the operatingshaft. The operating shaft 15 is provided with a ratchet 25, the teeth of which are engaged by a locking pawl 26. The operating shaft is also provided with fulcrum pins 27, for engagement with the spike or lever by which the shaft is turned or operated.
The side sheet 2 is provided with flanges 28 fitting under the end floor sheet 5 and outside hopper sheet 4;. And the end floor sheet 5 is in turn furnished with inner flanges 29, fitting inside the side sheet 2 and outside hopper sheet 4. And the'outside hopper sheet 4 is furnished with flanges 30 on the outside of the end floor sheet 5 and inside the side sheet 2, thus making an exceedingly strong, and at-the same time very simple and efficient construction and connection of the several side sheets, end floor sheetsand outside hopper sheets of the dump car body.
I claim 1. In an inside dump hopper car, the combinationwitli the center sills, upright side 1 sheets, inclined end floor sheets, lon itudinal inside hopper sheets and longitudinal outside hopper sheets, of doors, hinge brackets secured to the center sills under the inside hopper sheets, and an operating shaft, winddrums and doors, sai drums having shouldered locking faces and a connecting link for eachdrumhaving a cooperating shouldered locking face, substantially as specified.
3. In an inside dump hopper car, the combination with the center sills, upright side sheets, inclinedend floor sheets, longitudinal inside hopper sheets and longitudinal outside hopper sheets, of doors, hinge brackets secured to the center sills under the inside hopper sheets, and an operating shaft, winding drums thereon, supporting brackets for said shaft secured under said outside hopper sheet, and connecting links between said drums and doors, said upright side sheets being flanged under said end floor sheets, substantially as specified.

In an inside dump hopper car, the combination with the center sills, upright side sheets, inclined end floor sheets, longitudinal inside hopper sheets and longitudinal outside hopper sheets, of doors, hinge brackets secured to the center sills under the inside hopper sheets, and an operating shaft, winding drums thereon, supporting brackets for said shaft secured under said outside hopper sheet, and connecting links between said drums and doors, said upright side sheets being flanged under said end floor sheets, and under said outside hopper sheets, substantially as specified.
5. In an inside dump hopper car, the combination with the center sills, upright side sheets, inclined end floor sheets, lon itudinal inside hopper sheets and longitudinal out side hopper sheets, of doors, hinge brackets secured to the center sills under the inside hopper sheets, and an operating shaft, winding drums thereon, supporting brackets fc said shaft secured under said outside hopper sheet, and connecting links between said drums and doors, said upright side sheets being flanged under said end floor sheets,
and said end floor sheets being in turn flanged inside of said side sheets, substantially as specified.
6. In an inside dump hopper car, the combination with the center sills, upright side -sheets, inclined end floor sheets, longitudinal inside hopper sheets and longitudinal outside hopper sheets, of doors, hinge brackets secured to the center sills under the inside hopper sheets, and an operating shaft, winding drums thereon, supporting brackets for said shaft secured under said outside hopper sheet, and connecting links between said drums and doors, said upright side sheets being flanged under said end floor sheets, and said end floor sheets being in turn flanged inside of said side sheets, and outside.

8. In an inside dump hopper car, the combination with the center sills, upright side sheets, inclined end floor sheets, longitudinal inside hopper sheets, and longitudinal outside hopper sheets, of doors, hinge brackets secured to the center sills under the inside hopper sheets, and an operating shaft,
winding drufns thereon, supporting brackets for said shaft secured under said outside hopper sheet, and connecting links between said drums and doors, said upright side sheets being flanged under said end floor sheets and under said outside hopper sheets, and said end floor sheets being in turn flanged inside of said side sheets, and outside hopper sheets, and said outside hopper sheets being in turn flanged on the outside of said end floor sheets and inside said side sheets, substantially as specified.
9. In a dump car, the combination with a dump car body, of a hinged door, an operating shaft, a polygonal drum on said shaft having a shouldered locking face and a pivot lug, of a connecting link pivoted to said lug, a short intermediate connectin link, a shouldered locking face on said intermediate link engaging the shoulderedlocking face of said drum, and a long connecting link, extending from said intermediate link to the door, substantially as specified.
10. In a dump car, the combination with a dump car body, of a hinged door, an operating shaft, a polygonal drum on said shaft having a shouldered locking face and a pivot lug, of a connecting link pivoted to said lug, a short intermediate connecting link, a shouldered locking face on said intermediate link engaging the shouldered locking face of said drum, and a long connecting link, extending from said intermediate link to the door, said long link having 12. A dump car body having upright side sheets, inclined end floor sheets, outer longitudinal hop er sheets and inner longituinal hopper s eets, said upright side sheets being flanged under said end floor sheets and said outer hopper sheets, said end floor sheets being in turn flanged inside of said side sheets and outer hopper sheets, substantially as specified.
13. A dump car body having upright side sheets, inclined end floor sheets, outer longitudinal hopper sheets and inner longitudinal hopper sheets, said upright side sheets being flangedunder said end fioor sheets and said outer hopper sheets, said end floor sheets being in turn flanged inside of said side hinged on or near the center sills, with an" operating shaft for said doors having bearings under and attached to said outside hop-' per sheet, substantially as specified.
