Specification r Letters Patent. Patented July 19, 1910.
application filed July 1, 1909. Serial No. 505,341.
To all whom it may concern:
Be. it known that I, ARGYLE CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and Stateof Il1i-no1s,-have invented a new and useful Im provement in Dump-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in dump cars.
the sake of clearness. Fig.3 is ayertical' cross section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 1 is a detail plan view of the ratchet mechanism. Fig. 5 is "a bottom plan view of same. Fig. 6 is a detail elevation of one of the ratchet mechanisms, partly in vertical section on line 6'-6 of Fig, 5. Fig. 7 1s a detail plan view and Fig. 8a detail vertical section illustrating a modification on line 88 of Fi 7. I
In the rawing, 1 represents a dump car,
2 the center sills, 3 the upright sides, 4: the
inclined ends and 5, 5 and 6, 6 the inclined sides of longitudinally arranged hopper bottoms 7 8, one set of said hoppers "being on each side of the longitudinal center or mid dle line of the car body, the two central inclined sides 6, 6 of the ho pers extending over the center sills 2 longitudinal middle line of the car. The hoppers 7, 7 and 8, 8 on each side of the 1011- gitudinal middle of the car are divided or separated transversely from each other bone or more, prefers. ly three, inverted cross hopper sheets 8, 9. The discharge openings 10 of thehop re 7, 8 are closed by doors 11, each hing at its outer longie to one of the outer inclined. sides 5 of t e be pers 7, 8 so that each of the hoppers may e centrally dumped by hin es 12.
'l he means for opening and closing the several doors 11 preferably consists of operating shafts 13, one for the doors of each 2 an meeting at the.
' closeliylongitudinal set of hoppers 7, 8, and arranged under the longitudinal center hopper sheets 6, 6, which extend over the center $1115 2, and door operating mechanism on said shafts for the several doors arranged under the cross hopper sheets 9, each door operatin mechanism preferably consisting of a po ygonal winding drum 14 onthe shaft 13 in connection with links 15, 16, 17 18 and 19 adapted to wind around said drum, the link 18 having a lockingshoulder 20 adapted to en age a locking shoulder 21 on the drum, an the link 19 having a bent end 22 hinged to the link 18 d'irectl the center of the drum when the 001' is closed and to which link 19 the door is piv which meshes .with' a bevel gear. 25 on the ratchet shaft '2( 5. The ratchet shaft 26 is uprlght, and 1s flournaled under the inclined end sheet 4 of t e dump car. It is rovided at its up er end with a ratchet 27 aving a series 0 rectangular fiat faced teeth 28, the teeth being preferably '8 in number. The ratchet shaft is'turned by a fulcrum wheel 29 having a plurality of upwardly progecting fulcrums or'posts'30 adapted to receive an ordinary bar .or stick of wood between't em as a lever for turning the) ratchet shaft. 'Each of the fulcrums or posts is preferably tarnished with a flange 31 at its upper end to aid in keeping the operating-lever or bar in position. The fulcrum wheel 29 is furnished with one or more pivoted pawls 32, each having a flat "end face '33, adapted to engage the flat faced teeth 28 of the ratchet 27.- 'By'this means the dump doors may be operated very conveniently. and with entiresafety to the oper ater.
a The longitudinal center hopper sheet or hoppersides 6 6 have openin '35 therein registering an intersecting w th the cross hopper sheets 9 and covered thereby-to .accommodate or I receive the door operating mechanisrnon the longitudinall extending operating shaft 13., This enah' es the door operating shaft to 'be located under and adjacent to the hopper sides, and thus ring the operating shaft and the door operating mechanism substantlall dlrectly over the free or swinging edge 0 the door as required, whilefat thes'ame time giving erably of a concave shape.- These recessed covers or housings 34 correspond in principle and function to the end portions of the cross hopper sheets.
The doors may be operated up ordown as occasion may require, by simply swinging the-pawls to the right or left so that they are in position to engage the opposite flat face of the ratchet teeth,
I claim 1. In a dump .car, the combination with a dump car body having discharge openings on each side of its longitudinal center, and central longitudinally extending inclined hopper sides, and provided with cross hopper sheets transversely separating said discharge openings, doors hinged at their outer side edges for closing said openings to adapt the car for central dumping, longitudinal operating shafts for said doors extending under said central hopper sides and provided with operating mechanism for said doors/ arranged under said cross hopper sheets substantially as specified.
2. In a dump car, a dump car body adapt ed for central dumping, having openings on ;each side of ,its longitudinal center, and
central, longitudinal hop er sides and cross hopper sheets transverse y separating said openin s, doors hinged at their outer side edges or closin said openings, and a lon 'itudinally extending operating shaft .un er said longitudinally extending hopper sides and door operating mechanism undersaid ,cgogs hopper sheets, substantially as spec- 1 e 3/ In a dump car, the combination with a dump car bodyhaving discharge openings on each side of its longitudinal center, and
central, longitudinally extending inclined hopper sides, and provided with cross hop per sheets transversely separating said discharge openings, doors hinged at their outer side edges for closing said openings in adapt the car. for central dum ing, longitudinal operating shafts for sai doors extending under saidcentral hopper-sides, and prodoors arran edun vided withoperatinig mechanism for said.
er said cross hopper sheets, said oor operating mechanism oomprising a polygonal winding drum and links connected thereto and to thedoors, the drum and one of said links having locking shoulders, substantially as specified. V
4; Ina dump car, the combination with a dump car'- body having a discharge opening and a door for closing the same, and an operating shaft and connections for operatin the door, of a ratchet and a fulcrum whee carrying. a pawl, and provided with a plurality of fulcrum posts to receive an operating lever, substantially as s ecified.
5. Ina dump car, the comblnation with a door and its operating shaft and connections for operating the door from said shaft, of
aratchet shaft, a ratchet thereon, a fulcrum wheel provided with a pawl en aging the ratchet and furnished with a p urality of fulcrum posts to receive a lever, substantially as s ecified. 6. In a dump car, the combination with a door and its operating shaft and connections for operating the door from said shaft, of a ratchet shaft, aratchet thereon, a fulcrum wheel-provided with a pawl engaging the ratchet and furnished with a plurality of fulcrum posts to receive a lever, said ratchet having fiat faced teeth, and the pawl having a flat end face -adapted to fit against the flat faces of the teeth, substantially as specified.
7. Ina dump' car, a dum car body adapted for central dumping an having openings on each side of its longitudinal center and central longitudinal hopper sides, doors hinged at their outer side edges for closing saidopenings, and a longitudinally extending operating shaft under and closely adjacent to said lon itudinally extendinghopper side, and a oor operating mechanism projecting abdve and inside of the plane of said hopper side, sub stantially' as specified. 8. In a dum car, a dump car body adapt edfor central umping and having openings.
' said hopper side, saidhopper side having ,an
opening and a recessed cover for said opening to accommodate said door operating mechanism, substantially as specified.
