Application led November 4, 1918. Serial No. 260,925. p
To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that l, HARRY S. HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, 'in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Dump-Car Constrwctions, of which the following is a specifieation.
rlhis invention relates to dump cars.
The object of this invention is to simplify and improve dump car constructions ina novel manner to increase the capacity thereof and at the same time retain the self cleaning feature. l
rlhis and other objects are accomplished by means of the arrangement disclosed'by the accompanying sheets of drawings in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a railway dump car embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan View of' the same car;
' Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same dump car taken over one of the trucks; and
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of the same car taken between the trucks.
Itis a well recognized fact that it is of vitalimportance to increase the carrying capacity of railway cars and especially dump cars for carrying coal and other dumpable materials in view of the great demand as a result of trac conditions.
In one well known type of dump car in which the Hoor intermediate the trucks is dat and composed of aplurality of transversely doors and in which the floor portions over the trucks include a long sloping member extending from the end of the car downwardly toward the transverse center line of the car, it is found that the capacity can be effectively increased by changing the floor construction over the trucks.
Referring to the figures of the drawings, it will 'be noted that I have shown a dump' car including sides 10, ends 11 and a Hoor, the floor portions over the trucks being of -shaped construction in which the apex 12 of the'A is located over the center sill 13, the sloping members 14 of the A-shaped portion extending downwardly and outwardly toward the sides of the car. These sloping iioor members 14 preferably are stationary and connected to the under frame' to thereby increase the stiEness and rigidity of and 'swinging Aover t'he trucks will the car structure. The discharge openings at the lower ends of the floor portions 14 normally are closed by side dump doors l5 which preferably are pivotally connected at 16 along the lower edges of the sides 10 of the car, the swinging edges of the doors 15 when lin closed position forming a tight seal with the lower edges of the floor members 14. The dump doors 15 may be providedwith any suitable operatingy mechanism including operating shafts 17, preferably carried by the doors 15, and also chains 18, which connectthe shafts with the stationary floor portions 14.
rlihe floor intermediate the trucks is dat and at a lower level than the door portions over the trucks and includes a plurality. of-transversel hinged dump doors 19, the doors prefera ly being arranged in pairs toward and from each other to closed and opened positions respectively. Leading from the extreme doors 19 nearest the ends of the car are sloping door members 20 which extend to the apex 12 of the Hoor portions over the trucks. In cars heretofore built the sloping floor portions 2() at each end isl continued in the same plane to the endof the car. It is apparent, therefore, that by providing the Hoor construction over the trucks as disclosed in this application the carrying capacity of the dump car is greatly increased and at the same time the self cleaningfeature is retained. When' the side dump doors 15 are opened it will be appreciated that all of the dumpable material be discharged to either side of the car, and when the transversely arrangeddump doors 19 are opened. the remaining dumpable material in the'car will be discharged intermediate the trucks, whereby the car will be substantially self cleaning. The transversely hinged dump doors 19 may be provided with any suitable operating mechanism 21.
Itis my intention to cover all of the modifications falling within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
Iclairml. In a car of the class described having sides, ends, and a Hoor, the floor over the trucks comprising portions sloping downwardly and outwardly toward the sides of the car, the floor intermediate the trucks being-'dat and at a lower level than the floor portions over trucks and including a plurality of transversely hinged doors.
' trucks comprising'stationary portions Slo ing downwardly and outwardly toward t e sides of the car, the Hoor between the trucks being fiat and comprising a plurality of doors hinged transversely of the car and swinging toward and from each other to closed and opened positions respectively.
3. A car of the class described having sides, ends, and a iioor, the floor over the trucks comprising stationary portions slopingr downwardly and outwardly toward the sides of the car, side dump doors associated with said sloping portions for dumping a part of thev load to the sides of the car, the floor between the trucks being Hat at a lower level than the portion over the trucks and comprising a plurality ofy transversely hinged doors, and door operating mecha nism for said doors.l
4. A car of the class described having a single ioor vwhich at the ends of the car comprises stationary portions sloping. downwardly and outwardly toward the side of the car, doors hinged to the side of the car and coperating at their swinging edges with the outer edges of vthe sloping floor portion, the remainder of the Vfloor being substantially s horizontal and composed largely of doors arranged to drop to discharge the load, and operating mechanism for said doors.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 30th day of October, 1918.
` HARRY S. HART.
