UNKD ATEid PATENT @FFICE.
HARRY T. KINGSBURY, OF KEENE, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
TOY DU1VIP-GAR.
Application filed September 16, 1910.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY T. KmosnUnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keene, in the county of Cheshire, State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful lnu'n'ovements in Toy Dump ars, oil which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
M y invention relates to improvements in toy dump cars, the object being to provide a novel construction of toy of this character which shall be formed of comparatively few pieces of sheet metal, stamped out and bent into proper form.
The invention therefore, consists in the matters hereinafter described and referred to in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a toy constructed in accord ance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the arrangement for dumping the car. Fig. 3 is a detail view Oil one of the side pieces, Fig. 41: is a perspective view of one of the inclined end pieces; Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the dumping leaves; Fig. 6 is a detail view of the plate which holds the dumping leaves together; Fig, 7 is a detail view of the operating lever.
In these drawings, A represents the car as a whole. It is composed of the two side pieces B, cut out as shown at C, and formed with downwardly projecting perforated ears D for the support of the wheeled axle.
E represents a plate bent to form the bottom end part- F of the car, and the upwardly inclined bottom of the load holding part of the car, this being marked G. The lower part F of this plate, is provided with lugs a on each side, fitting in openings b on the side plates and the upper part G of the plate is bent as shown at H, and is provided with lugs c to fit openings (Z in the side plates.
Between the inner edges of the two plates E, is an opening through which the load may be dumped, being directed toward the center by the inwardly turned projections e on the side plates B.
I, as shown in Fig. 6, represents a troughshaped plate having end lugs f fitting in openings 9 in the side plates B. This trough I. has on each of its opposite lower sides, a pair of lugs h which pass respectively Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented June 13, 1911.
erial No. 582,382.
through openings '1 in the upper part of the dumping leaves K. 'lhese lugs are bent around toward each other to hold the leaves in position, and also to form a hearing from which said leaves are hinged.
Journaled in the openings 6 in each of the plates B is a wire rod K having two cranks in. which in the oscillation of the rod, by means of the projecting handles it, a, respectively engage the two dumping leaves with some degree of pressure and hold them in closed position. When these cranks are released from engagement with the dumping leaves, the latter swing toward each other by gravity and allow the contents of the car to be dlunped.
Having thus particularly described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A toy dump car comprising side plates, end plates each bent to form a portion of the bottom of the car proper, and a portion of the bottom of the load holding part of the car, said side and end plates having interengaging lugs and grooves.
2. A. toy dump car comprising side plates, end plates bent to form a portion of the bottom of the car proper, and a portion of the bottom of the load holding part of the car, said side and end plates having interengaging lugs and grooves, a. central cross plate having interengaging lug and groove connection with the side plates, dumping leaves pivoted thereon, and means for operating the dunu iing leaves.
3. A toy dump car comprising side pieces, a cross piece connected thereto, having oppositely bent lugs, dumping leaves having openings engaging said lugs, and on which they are hung, and means for swinging the leaves.
4. A toy dump car comprising side pieces, a cross piece connected thereto, dumping leaves pivotally hung on said cross piece and normally open, and means independent of said leaves but adapted to be brought into positive engagement therewith for swinging them to close said leaves.
5. A toy dump car, comprising side pieces, a cross piece connected thereto, dumping leaves pivotally hung on said cross piece, and a rod having oppositely extending cranked portions independent of the leaves, but adapted to positively engage said leaves to operate the same.
6. In a toy dump car, a cross piece having ed to be brought into positive engagement oppositely extending lugs, leaves hung on With the leaves or doors to close the same. in
said lugs, and means for swinging said In testimony WhereofI aifix my signature, leaves. g in presence of tWo Witnesses.
7. In a toy dump car, dumping leaves or HARRY T. KINGSBURY. doors, a pivotal support on which they are Witnesses: loosely hung, and a single lever having C. C. STURTEVANT, means independent of the leaves but adapt- L. G. LITGHFIELD.
