SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,123, dated April 7, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DOMNIOK M. CAREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oanton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in DumpingOars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and ex act description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon,in which Figure l is a top view showing the body of the car removed. Fig. 2 is a crosssection through the line a: m in Fig. 1, showing a portion of the body tipped or dumped. Fig. 3 is a side view of the entire car. Fig. 4 is an end View of the truck, showing the body of the car turned sidewise and tipped or dumped. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of part of the car through the line y y in Fig. 1, also showing part of the body of the car.

The present invention has relation to the general improvement of dumping-cars; and its nature consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the frame of the truck, which is sub stantially of the form shown in the drawings, and is constructed so as to attach the axles in the ordinary manner. To the frame A is securely attached the draw-bar a,which may be of the form and style shown in the drawings. To the top or upper side of the frame A is securely attached, by suitable clamping-bolts or other devices, the turn-table plate B,which is of the form shown in Fig. 1, and is provided with a smooth surface upon its top or upper side for the movements of the wheels I).

The spider (l is substantially of the form shown in Fig. 1, and is heldin the desired position by the king-bolt D, said king-bolt being securely held to the frame A by means of the cross-bar E, as seen in Figs. 1, 2, and 4. This spider O is provided with the arms F F and F, to which arms are attached the traveling wheel I), said traveling wheels being so arranged that they will come directly over the turn-table plate 13, as seen in the drawings.

Thcxarms F F are provided with the open extensions G G, which are for the purpose ofreceiving and holding the connecting-bar H, as seen in Figs. 1 and 5. The arm F is provided with a raised projection, I, which is for the purpose of holding the body J in a horizontal position, as seen in Fig. 3. The body J is substantially of the form shown in the drawings, the bottom or under side of which is provided with the plates K, said plates K being securely attached to the body J by means of suitable clamping-bolts. The ends of the plates K next to the open extensions G G are bent or curved downward, and are provided with openings for the passage of the connecting-bar H, said connecting-bar being held in the desired position by the keys L. The openings in the extensions G G should be a little larger in diameter than the connecting-bar H, so that the body J can be easily operated.

It will be seen that by my peculiar arrangement I am enabled to bring the body of the car very close .to the frame A through the means of the spider 0, thus forming acar easily loaded, and at the same time can throw or pitch the body J to such an angle that it will be easily dumped.

I am also enabled to turn the body J to any point before dumping it. To hold the body J in a horizontal position, I provide the hinged bail M,which may be of the form shown, and is attached to the end of the body J, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and maybe placed under the draw-bar a, or under a pin provided and properly located for holding said bail.

I am aware that it is old to hinge a car-body at both sides to a platform provided with an upward projection atits rear or at one side for the car to rest upon when in its normal position; also, thatit is old to hinge a car-body to a revolving turn-table, the body having affixed to its body a downwardly-proj ecting lug fitting between two ears on the table, and a rod being passed through the lug and ears to hinge the body to the table; and such features I do not claim, broadly. My invention differs therefrom in the particulars specified in the following claims. Y

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. The revolving spider 0, formed of a series ICO of arms, two of which are provided with the hollow extensions G, and the third with the raised projection I, substantially as described.

The cogpbinatiomwith the frame A, provided with turn-table, and the body J, of the spider 0, formed of a series of arms, two of which are provided with the hollow extensions G, and the third with a raised projection, I, and a rod, H, passing through said hollow extensions and a part of. the body J, to hinge the latter, substantially as described.

3. The combination of the body J, provided with plates K, having projecting apertured lugs or ears, the spider O,formed with hollow extensions G,fitting between the ears of plates K, and the rod H, passing through said ears and the hollow extensions, substantially as described.
