UNITED STATES PATENT I OFFICE.
JOHN HENRY HAMMER, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
AUTOMATIC DUMPlNG-TRUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,960, dated August 10, 1897. Application filed March 15, 1897. Serial No. 627 ,637. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY HAMMER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Dumping-Trucks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in automatic dumpingtrucks, and has for its object to provide a device which will dump the body and lock the wheels together to prevent movement, and further aims to construct a device which is applicable to trucks for railway freight-cars.
The invention further aims to construct a truck that will be extremely simply in construction strong, durable, effectual in its op eration, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture; and the invention further resides in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like figures of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a view showing the operation of dumping. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view. Fig. 4c is a longitudinal sectional view showing means for locking the wheel. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the same, showing wheels locked. Fig. 6
is a view showing means for securing the body of the truck. Fig. 7 is a top plan View of the handle and releasing means. Fig. 8 is a view showing means for hinging the sections together.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the frame, composed of two sections 1 and 2,hinged together at 3. Said frame carries a body 4:, hinged to section 2 at 5. Said body is provided with means for attachinga hose or forcepump, as shown at 5 and 5*. To the sections are secured brackets 6 6, provided with bearings 7 7 to receive axles 8, carrying wheels 9. To the rear axle is secured a rod 10, provided with a recess 11 to engage the front axle when the truck is dumped. Said rod is provided with a handle 12. The handle 13 carries a lever 14, provided with a connecting-rod 15, engaging a spring-pressed catch 16, engaging a lug 17 on the body.
To one of the frames is secured means for engaging the body to automatically dump the same, which is shown in Fig. 7 as lazy-tongs 18, having a roller 19 to engage the car-body.
The operationof my improved truck will be readily apparent from the several views of the same that I have shown in the drawings, and a more concise description is deemed unnecessary; but I desire to point out some of the many advantages obtained, first among which is the fact that by my improved-construction the body is allowed to turn completely upside down and the breaking of the frame brings the wheels into frictional contact, thereby forming an eflectual break.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what- I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is- 1. A dumping-car provided with a hinged sectional frame, automatic dumping mechanism, secured to the said sections, a rod provided with a recess, said rod operating to lock the wheels into frictional engagement, and means carried by the handle, to release the body, substantially as shown and described.- 2. A dumping-car provided with a frame hinged intermediate the ends, wheels carried by said frame, a spring-catch secured to the front section, engaging a lug secured to the body, means for releasing the spring-catch, and means for locking the wheels into engagement, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a dumping-car, a sectional frame, a body hinged to said frame, means'secured to the sections to automatically dump the body, and means for locking wheels into frictional contact, substantially as shown and describ ed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
