To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTHEW VAN WAG- ENEN, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dump-Wagons, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full,
clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in dump-wagons, having more particular reference to that class in which the bottom wall of the receiving chamber consists, of movable sections hinged to the lateral side walls of the box and having their adjacent free ends adapted to meet substantially midway between said side walls, said movable bottom sections being elevated by a suitable drum and cable and adapted to open or drop by gravity when released.
The object of my invention is to provide certain improvements in this class of dumpwagons-viz., first, compensating mechanism for taking up the sag or inequality of movement of the movable bottom-wall sections;
second, means for preventing the accumulation of dirt or other obstacles in the joints between the hinged bottom sections and side walls of the box; third, mechanism for preventing the accidental movement of the bottom sections of the dump-box to their dumping position while carrying the load; fourth, means for holding the operating-pawl and stop-dog for the reel'or drum in their inoperative positions when the drum is released in the act of dumping the wagon; fi fth, connections between the body of the wagon and front axle for permitting the lateral rocking movement of the body of the wagon upon the fifth-wheel without liability of unduly straining the king-bolt or overturning the wagonbox when the front axle is turned lengthwise of the box or at right angles with the rear axle.
To this end the invention consists in the combination, construction, and arrangement of the parts of a dump-wagon, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of the upper portion of a dump-wagon embodying my various improvements. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken Fig. 3 is an enlarged top plan view of a portion of one side of the su end of the king-bolt, showing the. elongated opening for receiving the same. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the fifth-wheel bearing-sections. Fig. 7 is a rear view of a portion of the dumpbox, showing the compensatinglever and also showing the open joint between one of the side walls and the adjacent hinged bottom section. Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 7, showing a slightly modified compensating mechanism.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
In the drawings I have shown a portion of a dump-wagon consisting of a superstructure or box 1, a front axle 2, a fifth-wheel 3 between the front end of the dump-box and front axle, a king-bolt 4, and a rotary drum 5.
The dump-box 1 preferably consists of side, front, and rear walls 6, '7, and S and movable bottom sections 9, having upturned sides 10,
which are hinged to their upper edges at 11 to the side walls 6. These'movablebottom sections are normally arranged in a substantially horizontal position and meet in a plane substantially midway between the side walls 10 when in their closed position, said side walls 10 being substantially coincident with and forming a continuation of the side walls 6 and are formed with inner beveled edges 12, adjacent to the lower edges of the side walls 6 for preventing the accumulation of dirt or other obstacles which are liable to interfere with the perfect operation of the movable bottom sections. The meeting edges of the bottom sections are also preferably beveled at 13 for a similar purpose-that is, to prevent the accumulation of any dirt or stones which might prevent the closing of the sections. I preferably provide the meeting edges of each of the sections with rollers 14, which are mountedin suitable brackets 15 and are adapted to receive chains or cables 16.

The drum is provided with eyes or equivalent fastening means 17, to which are secured the front ends of the cables 16, and in order to properly guide the cables and facilitate the elevation of the bottom sections I provide the front wall 7 of the box with suitable idlers 18, which are separated a distance substantially equal to the distance between the idlers 14: at opposite sides of the meeting edges of the bottom wall. The rear ends of the cables 16 are passed under the idlers 14 and are connected to a suitable compensating lever or equivalent device 19. This compensating device is pivoted to the rear wall 8 at 20, its opposite ends being hook-shaped and adapted to receive the links of the chain or other loop if the cable is employed, and it is evident from the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings that when the chains are wound upon the drum 5 in the act of raising the bottom sections to their closed position theinequalityin the movement of the hinged sections is readily taken up by the compensating lever 19. Although this compensating mechanism just described is particularly simple and efficient, it is evident that other means may be employed with equal efficiency, and at Fig. 8 I have shown a continuous chain 16 and an idler 19', pivoted at 20 to the rear wall 8, the intermediate portion of the chain being passed over the idler 19, and the opposite ends of said chain are secured to the eyes or similar fastening means 17 on the drum, it being understood that should one of the bottom sections close before the other the continued rotation of the drum 5 would readily draw the other section into its closed position.
In the preferred form of compensating mechanism seen in Fig. 7 I have shown a supporting-bracket 21, arranged in the form of a loop, open at its upper end and having its lower end united to the lower wall beneath the pivotal pin 20, so that if from any cause the pivotal pin should break or get out of place the lever 19 would still be retained in substantially its normal position, and thereby prevent the accidental dumping of the wagon.
The drum 5 is provided with a ratchet-wheel 22, which may be secured to the drum in any desired manner not necessary to herein illustrate. The ends of the drum are journaled in suitable boxes or bearings 23, fastened to the inner face of the side walls 6, and said bearings are preferably open at their upper ends for permitting the removal of the drum whenever desired without removing the bearings. Loosely mounted on the drum 5, in proximity to and preferably at the outer side of the ratchet-wheel 22, is an operating member 24, arranged in the form of a hand-lever, and pivotally mounted upon the operating member is a pawl 25, having its forward end pivoted at 26 and its rear end adapted to engage the teeth of the ratchet-wheel 22 in such manner that as the lever is elevated the drum will be rotated in the bearing 23, the pawl 25 being free to ride over the teeth as the handlever is lowered. Pivotally mounted upon the adjacent sidewall 6 is a stop-lever 27, which is preferably pivoted at its intermediate portion at 28 to a suitable bracket or stop 29, secured to the side wall 6, the rear end of said stop-lever being adapted to engage the teeth of the ratchet-wheel in advace of and directly beneath the pawl 25, said lever 27 being provided with a rearward extension 30, which is connected by a spring 31 to a suitable eye or equivalent fastening member 32, secured to the front wall 7 of the box 1, the spring 31 serving to hold the ratchet-engaging end or shoulder of the lever 27 in engagement with ratchet-teeth and at the same time permitting the teeth to readily pass under said shoulder. The forward end of the lever 27 extends a suitable distance beyond the pivot 28 and preferably in front of a seat 33 and is provided with a foot-engaging portion 34 and a locking-dog 35. This locking-dog is pivoted to the lever 27 at 36, its upper end being provided with a foot or hand engaging portion 37, and its lower end extends downwardly and is adapted to engage a suitable wearing-plate or stop-face 38, secured toa platform 39, beneath andin front of the seat-support. This locking member 25 serves to hold the rear end of the lever 27 in engagement with the ratchet-teeth when the bottom sections 9 are in their position for retaining a load and serves to prevent any accidental dumping of the wagon during the transportation of theload from one place to another. This is a particularly simple and eflicient means for carrying out this object of my invention, and it is believed to be broadly new in this class of dump-wagons. The rear end of the lever 27 is so arranged relative to the pawl 25 that when the forward end of the lever is depressed the rear 'end of said lever is elevated out of the path of the teeth of the ratchet-wheel and simultaneously engages and elevates the pawl 25 out of the path of said teeth. This operation is for the purpose of releasing the ratchet and permitting the drum to rotate freely in the act of dumping the load from the movable bottom sections. In wagons of this class it has been the custom to rely upon the operator for holding the pawls and stop-dog out of engagement with the ratchet-wheel during the operation of dumping the load, and inasmuch as the ratchet-wheel rotates with considerable speed and the strain thereon being considerable it frequently happens that one or the other of the pawls will engage or slightly engage one or more of the teeth during the unwinding of the drum and either break the teeth or pawls, and in order to obviate this liability I provide the front end of the vehicle with a suitable spring-catch 40, having a shoulder 41, adapted to engage the upper face of the forward end of the lever 27 when the pawl 25 and lever 27 are disengaged from the ratchet ICC wheel, thus preventing any liability of the pawls and 27 engaging with the teeth of the ratchet when the drum is being unwound.
The platform 39 is provided with a suitable aperture 42 and a. wearing plate 43, also formed with an aperture alined with the aperture 42 for receiving the upper end of the king-bolt 4. These'apertures are preferably elongated laterally, and the lower end of the king-bolt is firmly secured by a tapering fit in the axle 2 of the wagon. It is therefore evident that as one of the front wheels passes over the obstruction or the axle 2 tilted from any cause the king-bolt is free to ride in the apertures of the platform 39 and plate 43.
The'lower section of the fifth-wheel (represented in Fig. 6) is provided with raised portions 50,,having a substantially fiat upratchet-teethduring the filling and transportation of the load. When desired to dump the load, the lever 35-is rocked on its axis toward a horizontal position, whereupon the lever 27, or, rather, its forward end, is depressed until engaged by the. catch 40. This operation forces the pawl 25 and adjacent end of the lever 27 out of engagement with the teeth of the ratchet-wheel,whereupon the bottom sections automaticallydrop to discharge the load, the drum 5 and ratchet-wheel 22 being free-to revolve for unwinding the chain of the cable. When drawing thebottom-sections together to their closed positionby the operating-lever24, should one of the doorsclose before the other the chain closing said door would become tight asthe drum continued to rotate, and would thereby rock the compensating lever 19 upon its pivot 20, thereby tensioning the loose side A or chain and drawing. the. other section firmly into-place.
The operation of my invention will now be readily understood upon reference to the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, and it will be noted that some change may be made in the detail constructionand arrangement of the various features of my invention without departing from the spirit thereofv Therefore I do not limit myself to the precise'constrnction and arrangement shown and: described.

1. In a dump-wagon the combination with hinged bottom sections of a dump-box, a rotary drum and cable connected to elevate said sections to their closed position, means for rotating the drum, a yielding stop for holding the drum initsadjusted position and a locking member pivotally mounted on the stock and, arranged to engage a-fixedmember on the wagon for holding said stop from yielding.
2. The combination with the hinged bottom sections of a dump-box adapted to'drop by gravity, a rotary drum connected to close said sections, means for rotating the drum, a stop pawl or lever for holding the drum in its adjusted position, saidstop-pawl being movable for simultaneously releasing the drum and disconnecting its rotating means therefrom, for the purpose described;
3'. The combination with a dump-wagon having movable bottom sections, a druin,-a cable connected to the drum and to said movable sections, a ratchet-wheel secured to the drum, an operating member or lever loosely mounted on the drum and provided with a pawl adapted to engage the teeth of-the' ratchet for rotating the-same in one-direction, a stop-pawl for engaging'the ratchet teeth and operable manually to release the former pawl from engagement with the ratchet, and means for locking the stop-pawl in engagement with said teeth for preventing the unwinding of the drum.
4. The combinationwith a dump-wagon having movable bottom sectionshinged to its side walls, a rotary drum at one end-of the movable'sections, a rocking member at the other end, cables or chains connected to said drums and to said rocking member at opposite sides of its pivot, the intermediate portion of said cable being connected to-the bottom sections and means for 'rotating-the drum.
5. In a dump-wagon, the combination with a box having hinged bottom sections, a rocking memberpivoted to the rear wall of the box above the bottom sections, a drum secured to the box at the other end of the bot tom sections, a cable or cables having their opposite ends connected to the rocking mem ber and to said drum and their intermediate portions connected to the movable sections,
means for rotating the drum to wind the cable thereon, additional means for preventing the return movement of the drum and a lock- "ing member for holding the latter means in its operative position.
6. In a dump-wagon, a dump-box having its bottom wall formed of'sections having up right side portions hinged to the side walls-of the box, the upper edges of said upright por tions of the sections-being beveled for preventing the accumulation of dirt or-other"- substance thereon and dischargingthedirt therefrom onto the horizontal portions of the sections.
7. A dump-wagon having hinged bottom walls, a rotary drum having cable'connected thereto and to the bottom walls for the purpose described and a rocking member mounted .on the frame of the wagon and connected to said cable at opposite sides of its axis for the purpose set forth.

In a dump-wagon, the combination with a dump-box having movable bottom sections hinged to its side walls, a compensating member secured to the box at the rear ends of the bottom walls, a drum revolubly mounted on the box at the front end of the bottom section, a cable or chain connected to the compensating member and drum and also to the bottom sections, a ratchet-wheel secured to the drum, an operating member having a pawl movable into and out of engagement with the teeth of the ratchet for rotating the drum and releasing the same, a stop-lever pivotally supported at its intermediate portion and having its rear end adapted to engage the teeth of the ratchet beneath the pawl, a spring for yieldingly holding the stop-lever in engagement with the ratchet-teeth, a locking member for positively locking said lever in engagement with the ratchet-teeth, said looking member being movable for releasing the lever and the lever being arranged to move out of engagement with the teeth and to simultaneously force the pawl out of the path of said teeth, and means for holding the lever in its inoperative position.
