Be known that I, HERMAN C. PRIEBE, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Blue island, Cool; county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocker-Bottom Cars, of which the following, tslien. in connectionwith the drawings, is a desci'i ion. 1
My invention has for'its object the production of rocker bottom doors for dump cars, the doors being so arranged that the loud may he dropped directly beneath the car, or at the side thereof as desired; Each. oi the doors or sections areconstructed so that they swing or tilt from closed to open position, and are provided with a lock upon the cutsit thereof, and when unlocked the weight contained in the car is suflicient to rorlr the loor on its hearings.
in thrm-roinpanying drawings I have illusre 61 :d the preferred form of my invention, l high it is obvious that the details thereof it he nimlil'ed Without departing from spirit of my invention, and I wish to be i irstood contemplating any such changes in c mstruction.

Fatented Jan. 1 1908.
In the form of construction. shown in Figs. 1 2'1 have shown two doors upon each. side of the center sill of the car. a, [is both of these doors are constructed and operated alike Twill describe but one of them. Extending transversely of the car and secured to the underl'rsrne thereof are the rocker shafts B, B, upon which the door sections B, B, swing. The door sections B, B, are carried upon the skeleton frames 5, which frames are mounted upon the rocker shafts B which. form the axes upon which the doors or sections are rocked when opened. The frames Z fit over the top of the rocker shaft B and have extending therethrough and beneath. the shafts U-bolts b (shown more clearly in Figs. 5 and 6). Extending parallel with each door section is rod C having, formed therein the cranks c, 1 each of which passes through one end. of a link D,
D, and which are adapted to be raised and lowered es the door sections are opened and closed. Levers C, C are secured to these rods at the on ter ends thereof, by means which. the rods are released and turned to open the door. The links 1), I) extend from the cranks c, c to the open end. or the door or section and are pivotaily secured to a projoction or flange (lcxtending from the frame I). A similar projection (1 extends beyond the center the .door section and when the door is in closed position said projection extends through a link (.1 which is secured to the side of the car, and a. hook or pin (1 is passed therethrough to prevent seid door from opening in case oi accident or otherwise.
in Fig.- 5 ol' the drawings l. hove shown it transverse section illustrating the doors opening -from the sides 01'? the car, but otherwise employing: the some construction as that described above.
in Fig. 4- l. have shown a. modified form ol" construction in which the door sections are hinged to the lloor at E and open down- \vzirdly as shown.
The (.rporn-tion is as l'ollows: VVhcu the car is rezidy 'lor unloading the hook (1* is distrunswuecl oi SzlKl cur is placed iron: the eye d and the operation levers C, U turned to release the rods when the weight of the loud in the cur will throw the lloor sections oll' lmlzu rc and rock them to opened position as shown more purtirulerly in Fig. 3. After the car is empty the levers are raised, carrying the cranks c, c and the links D, D with them until the door sections are closed, the link (1 fits over the ill) eye 01 and the hook (Z is passed therethrough, when the car is ready to be unloaded.
I claim:
1. The combination of the car body having a hopper bottom therein, a plurality of doors extending transversely across thebottom of said car, rocker shafts upon which said doors are mounted, and means for rocking or tilting said doors to en position.
2. A car having a hopper ottom therein, a plurality of door sections extending transyersely of said car and opening downwardly at each side of the hopper bottom, rocker shafts extending transversely of said car and approximately mediate of the width of the door sections, and means for rocking or tilting the aforesaid door sections on said shafts. a 3. The combination of a hopper bottom car, rocker shafts extending transversely of said car, a plurality of door sections mounted.
- upon frames adapted to tilt or rock on said shafts approximately mediate of the width of said door sections, U-bolts extending around. said shaft and secured to the door frame, and supports for said door sections when in opened position.
4. The combination of a hopper bottom car, rocker shafts extending transversely of said car, a plurality of door sections mounted upon and adapted to be tilted on said shafts approximately mediate of the width of said door sections, links secured to the outer edges of said door sections, a rod extending parallel with said doors to which said links are loosely secured and means for actuating said rod to open or close said door sections.
5. The combination of a hopper bottom car, a plurality of door sections opening from the bottom of said car, rockershafts upon which said door sections are mounted approximately mediate of the width thereof,
rods journaled in bearings secured to the car, links connected to said rods and to the outer edges of the door sections, and means for operating said rods to raise and lower the door sections.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
