PatentedY J une 13, 1911.
Application filed October 11,1910. Serial No. 586,525.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, COLUMBUS SMITH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cameron, in the county of Milam and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ghurns,
of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the Vaccompanying drawing.
rlhis invention relates to churns and the principal object of the same is to provide a novel supporting stand and dasher operating mechanism and means for hingedly supporting the dasher mechanism so that the same and the dashers can be rocked to a position at substantially right angles to the stand so that access can be had to said mechanism and dashers for cleaning or other purposes.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel dashers for the churn which rotate one within the other and in opposite directions.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, a preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of the improved churn. Fig, 2 is a central vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the stand for the churn. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the dashers for the churn. j
Referring to the accompanying drawingsby numerals, it will be seen that the iinproved churning machine comprises a stand having a fiat base 1 which has an upright standard 2 at the rear end thereof. Said base 1 has guard strips 3 at each side between which the churning receptacle 4 is seated. A latching lever 5 is pivotally connected to one of said strips and provided with a hook 6 for latching engagement with a lug 7 carried by the other strip so that said lever will retain the receptacle 4 on the base 1 between said strips 3.
The standard 2 has a pair of spaced parallel straps 8 rigidly fastened to the rear thereof, said straps being doubled and arranged vertically on said standard and having their upper ends bent at right angles Vmounted'in said ears.
A gearing frame is hinged to shaft 11, said frame being preferably formed of a single length of material, shaped to provide a body 12 having a bearing opening 13 formed through it, 'a pendent doubled base portion 14 that terminates in a hinge ear 15 that is mounted on shaft 11, and the upper and lower spaced parallel ends 16 and 17 which are provided with alined openings 18. A brace bar 19 has its lower end fastened between the doubled base portion 14, the upper end of said bar 19 being fastened to the front member 20 of the bearing frame. Bar 19 is provided with a transverse opening 21 that is in alinement with the opening 13 of body 12.
A power shaft 22 is ournaled in the bearings 13 and 21 of body 12 and bar 19. The rear end of said shaft is provided with a crank 23 which carries a handgrip 24. The forward end of said shaft extends between the ends 16 and 17 and has a master gear 25 mounted thereon,
A hollow shaft 26 extends above and below the end 17. A pinion 27 is fast on said shaft 26 and is in mesh with the lower portion of gear 25. Said hollow shaft projects into the churning receptacle 4 and has its lower portion split to provide the divergent legs 28 which are rigidly fastened to the upper portion of the Aouter dasher 29. Said dasher is rectangular in shape and vertically arranged. A dasher shaft 30 eX- tends through the hollow shaft 26 and has its upper end journaled in the upper end 16 of the gearing frame. The upper portion of shaft 30 carries a gear 31 that is in mesh with the upper portion of gear 25. Shaft 30 has its lower end journaled in the base of dasher 29 and carries a sleeve 32 upon which the inner dasher 33 is mounted. The inner dasher is of the same shape, but smaller, than dasher 29, and is arranged at right angles thereto.
A latching lever 34 is pivotally connected to the rear of standard 2, the free end of said lever being provided with a transverse notch for engaging the power shaft 22 to prevent the gearing frame being tilted.
With this structure it will be seen that by rotating power shaft 22, the dashers will be rotated in opposite directions. It will also be seen that by releasing lever 34 from shaft 22 the gearing frame can be rocked to a position substantially at right angles to the standard 2, as is indicated by dotted llines in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
What I claim as my invention is A churn operating mechanism comprising a support including a standard, verticallyarranged spaced parallel straps carried by the said standard, said straps having their upper ends bent at right angles and extending over the upper end of said standard and terminating in ears that overhang the base of said support, a pivot shaft carried by said ears, a gear frame having a pendent base ear that is pivotally mounted on said shaft between the overhanging ears, a power shaft journaled in said frame, a dasher shaft journaled in said frame and operated by the power shaft, and means carried by the standard for engaging the power shaft to normally prevent pivotal movement of said frame.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
COLUMBUS SMITH.
