Description

J. & I. McCOY.
cvmmnv PRESS FOR DOMESTIC USE.
No. 175.292. Patented March 28,1876.
.IN TOR f M gf w UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JOSEPH MCCOY AND ISAAC MOOOY, OF UNIONTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULINARY PRESSES FOR DOMESTIC USE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,292, dated March 28, 1876; application filed February 2, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH MCCOY and ISAAC MCCOY, of Uniontown, in Fayette county and State.of'Pennsylvania, have jointly invented certain Improvements in Culinary Press for Domestic Use, of which the following is a specication:
This invention consists in the arrangementof an ordinary rack and pinion, operating'in a slot formed in a cross-piece, which turns on a pivot, in combination with two uprights supported and aflixed to a table or "bench, jointly constituting a press applicable to various culinary and domestic purposes, as a new and useful kitchen or household utensil, in itself considered.
The accompanying drawings, together with the letters of reference marked thereon and a brief description, will enable those skilled in the art to make and usethe same, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the arrangement and construction of the press. Figs. 2 and 3 simply show a few of the uses to which the press can be applied, but making no partof the press.
Aare thelegs B,-the bench or-table. G0 are two uprights, braced below by brackets'ol. The
, upright O has the upper end formed into a square shoulder below a central round projection, H, to form the pivot for the cross-beam D, perforated at one end for said pivot. A pin and washer are usedin the ordinary way to secure it. The other end of this beam D is notched out to lit into a notch made on two sides into the upright 0, thereby allowing shoulders for it to rest upon, so that, when in place, the crossbeam and supports are flush with each other. There is a turn-button, F, to hold the crossbeam in place. ,This cross-beam D has an oblong slot between two journal-bearings on its upper face, for the reception of a pinion, K, with its shaft I in said boxes or journals. The end of this shaft is connected to a crank-handle, H, and operates a vertical cogged rackbar, L, guided in the slot and between the journal-bearings, as also by a friction-roller, M, in a raised bearing at its rear, as shown. The lower end of the rack-bar L has a pressing-disk, O P, firmly secured to it. To prevent back action while pressingy a'nd to hold the pinion, there is a pawl, N, hinged to the top Q of upright O, which engages in the cogs of the pinion. To adapt the bench to special use, a central conic perforation F is made, with Fig. 2
a groove, on two opposite sides. shows a cylinder, G, with a flange, g, to set on the bench. This cylinder has a conic base,
terminated by a spout, S, and side lugs at B.
By inserting this spout so as to pass the lugs B through the grooves f, and then giving it a quarter turn, the lugs lock, and the spout is brought in front, when the press will answer for stuffing sausage-meat, 85c.
By removing the same the lard-strainer, shown by Fig. 3, can be substituted, and lard rendered, to say nothing about fruit for preserving, making jellies, or wine. In short, it constitutes a useful domestic press, adapted to various purposes.
WVe are aware that there is no novelty in the rack and pinion, or the parts separately considered; nor do we claim the press for any special service. There is no change in the press itself, excepting that the beam D is swung outof the way when it is desired to make a change of vessels or receptacles used therewith without any disconnection of parts other than turning the button open or shut; hence we neither claim a lard-press, sausagestut'fer, nor fruit-press, but simply a culinary or domestic press, as a new and improved kitchen utensil or household article, adapted to various uses as a whole in other words,
What we claim is- The combination of the cross-beam D, fitted into an upright, O, on one side, and turning on a pivot on the other upright, 0, carrying with it the rack and pinion press-gear with the appliances, said uprights supported on a fixed table, B, which table is provided with a central opening, the whole arranged substantfiially in the manner and for the purpose speci- JOSEPH MCCOY. ISAAO MCCOY.
