DETACHABLE BOW FOR EYEGLASSES.
Application filed July 26, 1909. Serial No. 509,513.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL F. INGOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Detachable Bows for Eyeglasses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in detachable bows for eye glasses.
The object of this invention is to provide improved means for connecting and disconnecting the bows from the lenses.
In the following description reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a pair of eye glasses with one of my improved detachable bows applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view of one of the bows detached and in the position in which it is shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the clamping member showing a portion of one of the bows and with a portion of the lens indicated by dotted line as viewed from a point beyond the outer ends of the clamping jaws and said jaw in position for engagement with the lens. Fig. 4: is an enlarged detail view of the inner view of the clamping member showing a portion of the lens and with the bow illustrated in cross section. A set of clamping levers A and B are pivoted together at an intermediate point. he inner ends of the levers are provided with cushioning members 0 and the outer ends of the levers extend divergently and are adapted to be used by the thumb and finger of the user so by pressing these ends toward each other the inner ends of the levers may be separated and disconnected from the lens D.
The lever A. is provided with upper and lower side arms E having apertures e, and
these arms are respectively provided with upwardly and downwardly extending braces F, which engage the margin of the lens. The lever B is provided with upper and lower lips G, which lap over the outer surfaces of the arms E and are provided with extensions H of reduced width, which are turned inwardly to form the members J J (see Fig. 5) which taken together constitute a pivot post.
The bow K is formed of resilient material and at its inner end extends through an aperture L substantially at the center of the lever B and is coiled about the pivot post formed by the members J J with its extremity bearing upon the outer end portion of the member A as best shown at M in Fig. 6.
It will be observed from the described construction, the bow and the clamp actuating spring K are formed integrally from a single piece of wire. The clamping memher A, arms E and braces F are formed integrally or struck up from a single piece of sheet metal, and the clamping lever B with the lips G and the pivot posts J J are also formed integrally from another piece of material. My improved detachable bow is therefore a three piece structure except as to the cushioning members C C which are merely used for cushioning purposes and to increase the frictional engagement of the clamping levers with the lens.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a device of the described class, the combination of a pair of clamping levers having their central portions pivotally connected to a bow formed of resilient material, having its inner end extended at right angles to the pivotal axis of said levers through an aperture in one of the levers and coiled about the pivotal axis of said levers and forming a clamping actuating spring, each of said levers being provided with integrally formed arms loosely engaging the corresponding arms of the other lever and with the arms of one lever provided with a reduced extension projecting through the CARL F.
