Description
intetl tapes A. v. RYDER, or
NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 99,484, dated-February 1, 1870.
IMPROVE!) HASP FORTRUNK-LOCKS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that l, A. V. RYDR., ot the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trunk-Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a front view of a trunk-lock, as applied to the locking-portion of a trunk;
Figure 2, an inside viewof the hasp of the lock, as attached to the lid or opening-portion of the trunk; and
Figure 3, a section through the lid and bodyorlockportion ot' the trunk, together with the lock-case and hasp, showing the latter asclosed, or shut to its place in the lock.
Similar letters of reference' indicate corresponding parts. l
Owing to the rough usage which trunks for travellingpurposes 4are exposed, it is a matter of no small importance, to guard against any injury to the lock, as, for instance, by the sliding of one trunk over the other, or in various other ways.'
v t The only or most exposed portion of the lock is the hasp, which, as it is usually tted, forms a projection, not only atits hinge or joint, but also generally across or over it, from thc face-plate of the lock.
v My inventionl has for its object the` remcdying of this detect, and
It consists in forming the face-plate 'of the lock or trunk-surface, down or against which the hinged hasp tits when closed, with an indentation or recess in it, to reciive within said-face-surlace, the main or body- ,portion of the liasp.
Also, the invention includes an inside arrangement `of the hinge or joint tothe hasp, and indentation or recess, made in the face-plate of the lock or trunksurface, for such hinged portion to lie in when the hasp is closed.
In this way, or by these means, the hasp is protected from being strained or torn o, in or during the handling of the trunk, by reason of the Hush or embedded character given it,.relatively to the outside surface of the trunk, when closed and locked.
Referring to the accompanying drawing- A represents the lid or opening-portion of the trunk, to which the stationary portion a, ot' the hasp B is nailed, under cover of a band, b, or otherwise.
' The movable or locking-portion c of said hasp is y represented as hinged to the stationary part a, by a joint, d, so arranged as to forni an inside projection on the hasp, the main or body-portion of which latter, when closed, is made to lie within an indentation or recess, e, formed in the face-plate G of the lock, or outside surface of the trunk-body D, while the joint d tits or enters another or deeper recess, f, therein.
By these means or provisions, both the plate and joint-portions of the lnisp are prevented from protruding and being caught or struck, to the detriment or wrenching oii of the hasp, in or during any rough handling of the trunk, or sliding of another trunk or body over it.
What is here claimefhand desired to he secured by Letters Patent, isr l. A trunk-lock, in which the hasp B, when closed,
is made to lie within a recess, e, formed in'thefaoeplate ofv the lock or outside surface of' the trunk, sub-v stantially as specified.
2. The hasp B, formed with its joint d on the bacii or" inside tace of it, in combination with the resess f in the 4face-plate of the lock or outside surt'acelof the trunk, essentially as shown and described.
3. The combination of' the hasp B, having itsjoint d arranged as described, of the recesses c and f in the face-plate of the lock, or outside-surface ofthe trunk, substantially as speciiied. I A. V'. RYDER. Witnesses: 4
W. H. O. NEWSGHAFER, FRED. HAYNEs.
