Letters Patent No. 99,465, dated Febo-'Mary 1, 18'.
IMPROVEMENT IN THILL-COUPLINGS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent anlmaking part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED NORRIS, of Freedom Plains, in the county of Dutchess, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaft-Couplings; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the .aci companying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of 'this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a shaftcoupling, \i'ith rubber attachment, as will be hereinafter fully `set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertans, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section, and
Figure 2 isa plan view.
A represents the axle of a vehicle, around which is placed the clip B.
This clip is provided, on its front side, Vwith two projecting ears, C C, and between said ears the clip is grooved vertically.
The shaft-iron D, secured, in anyvsuitable manner, to'theishaft E, is .forked .or slotted, and fits between the ears C C. 'y
In the sloten the shaft-iron D-is inserted a piece of rubber, G, ofthe peculiar, construction shown in fig. l,
said rubber piece fitting `in the ,groove `on the clip B, i
between the ears C C. y l
The bolt I, which fastens, or, rather, pivots, the
shaft-iron to the ears C. C, passes through the rubber piece G.
Bythis arrangement, I obtain greater facility in removing the shafts from the wagon, the pressure of the rubber being removed'when the shafts are pointed on the ground; In the ordinary mode of placing a rubber, itlis very difficult to remove the bolt. The removal of the pressure, in 'my case, it will readily be observed, is effected bythe groove in the clip. The
` bolt, passing through the rubber, is held thereby, and
will notodrop out, even. if the nut should be lost, which l makes it a safe coupling tonse. tirely obviated.
Having thusfully described my invention,
IVhat I claim as new, and des-'1re to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the grooved v,clip B,ears C C, forked shaft-iron D, rubber AGr, andbolt I, al1 con,- structed and arranged as described, and for the purposes set forth. l
Intestimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, thislst day of December, 1869.
FRED NORRIS.
