Letters .Patent No. 99,453, dated February l, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT ,IN HINGES FOR SHOW-CASES.
`'.ll'he Schedule referred to inthese Letters Patent and :shaking part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J oHNMoAnAMs, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have `invented a new and useful Improvement in Hinges for Show-Cases,`of which the following is a full, clear, and
`exact description, reference being had to the accomshowcases, as applied to those doors thereof which 4 are hinged by their lower edge to the lower part ofthe rear side of the case; and in such connection, it is preferred to associate my invent-ion in this description, by way of showing the convenience and superiority of said hinge; and
lhe invention consists in combining with the buts,
joint-pin, and spring, a divided sleeve, inclosing said spring, whereby it is protected from injury, or becoining clogged with dust, which would intime impair its opera-tion, and at the saine time, a neater finish is given to the whole device.
Referring to the accompanying drawing- A A are but-hinges, of ordinary construction, but connected bya centre or joint-pin, B, common to both, and mranged at a suitable distance apart, according to the length of the door, edge, or'surface they are designed to he applied to.
Ooiled around the rod B, between the buts A A', is a spiral spring, G, havinfr its ends hooked or bent, to connect with the. buts through holes a a therein, the
. one end of said spring connecting withithg stationary leaf' of the one but, and the other end thereof with the movable leaf of the other but. Thisibrnisaspringhinge, made up of combined buts, having not only a joint-piu common to` both, but spring also, and the latter attached to the buts direct, without impairing their strength at the knuckle, or otherwise, and wholl y disconnected, so far as positive attachment` is concerned, from the rod. Such hinge, as a whole, is ready at once to be applied, as required, without any separate fitting ofthe spring or its parts, by simply screwing the buts to their places.
D D are sleeves, arranged between the hinges or .buts A A', and titting the one into the other, subject to :i collar-lock or stop, as at b, the ends of the spring G passing through holes in the outer ends of the sleeves, so that the latter. are free to turn independently of each other in the ceiling or uncoiling-of the spring.4 rlhese sleeves serve to protect the spring() v from injury and dust; also, to force the buts to the distance apart they assume under a wound-np condition of the spring, thereby simplifying the fitting of the combined hingeto its place.
AA spring-hinge, thus constructed, meets all the re quirements hereinbefore specified for such a. device, as applicable to show-cases, andV constitutes a marketable entirety or commodity that will be found verycon venient, and ofuq small public utility. 1 l
lVhat is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
The combination ofthe sleeves D with the buts AA', the spring C, and the cent-re or joint-pin B, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described. v
