BBOILER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BERNARD M0- GAUGHEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the count-y of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broilers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to broilers and is purposed to utilize gas in the broiling op eration and provide facilities for contemporaneously toasting other articles.

Further objects are to dispose of the drip, equalize the degree of heat exposure at all points upon the article broiling, to prevent the accumulation of excessive moisture and insure a suitable amount of air for combustion within the housing; to normally support and secure the broiling article in a vertical plane; and to permit the plane of the frame to be readily changed from its normal vertical position when the meat is being inserted or removed.

Other purposes will be hereinafter pointed out in the specification and will constitute subject matter for appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and wherein like reference letters indicate like parts throughout the views, Figure 1, is a perspective view of my broiler, Fig. 2, a central transverse section of the same, the frame being omitted, Fig. 3, a central vertical longitudinal section of the housing.

My broiler has a sheet metal housing comprising a rectangular oblong casing consisting of front and rear walls 2, 3, side walls 4, 5, and a top 6, together with a cover consisting of end walls, 7, 8, side walls 9, 10, and an inclined top 13. A hinge or hinges 14 connect the cover wall 9 to the top 6. The inclined top 13 is provided with an opening 15 which is covered with a strip 16 of fine wire gauze secured by rivets 17 or otherwise to the margin of the top. Upon the wall 10 of the cover is a handle 18. There are pins 19, 19 upon the rear margin, and a pin or pins 20 upon the forward margin of the top, the latter of which passes loosely through the interstices of the base or floor 21 of a reticulated receptacle, preferably composed of wire netting, and having its front and rear margins flanged or upturned as at 22 and 23. floor 21 is upwardly inclined toward its rear margin 23, and is supported at that point by a vertical strip 24 integral with the portion 23 at its top and provided at its bottom with a flat or inturned portion- 25 through whose interstices the pins 19 pass. Fixed to the wall 4 is a vertically projecting rest 26 which forms a stop or rest for the housing cover in its backward travel.

The wall 2 is provided with a vertical slot or opening 27 extending downwardly from its upper margin. In the wall 3 opposite the slot 27 is fixed by nuts 29 or otherwise an inwardly directed pivot pin 30. This pin passes through an oblong plate 31 intermediate the length of the latter, which plate is fixed. in horizontal position upon the pin by nuts 32.

The lower part of the wall 5 is cut away at its bottom to form an opening 33 to permit access of a drip pan 34 having lateral flanges 35 which slide in guides 36 fixed to the walls 2 and 3. This pan has a handle 37 upon its exposed front portion.

Gas'or other fuel is supplied to the housing through a gas pipe 39 with a reduced ribbed end 40 adapted to receive a flexible supply tube. Branching from this pipe at right angles thereto are two pipes 41 and 42 provided respectively with air inlets 43 and 44, and with cocks 45 and 46, and traversing openings 47 and 48 in the wall 2. The branch pipes extend across the interior of the casing near the walls 4 and 5 respectively,,having upon their ends joints or elbows 49 and 50 which abut against the walls 3, and connect pipe sections 51 and 52 which are parallel with and in the vertical planes of pipes 41 and 42 respectively. The ends of the plate 31 assist in supporting the inner ends of the pipes 51 and 52 which rest thereon. An auxiliary support or brace for the gas pipes is a rod 53 fixed at one end by a sleeve connection 54 to the pipe 39 intermediate the pipes 41 and 42. Its opposite end is threaded and passes through an opening in the housing wall 2 to which it is engaged by nuts 55 upon its threaded portion. Upon their opposite inner portions the pipes 41 and 42 are respectively provided with openings or jets 57 and 58. The pipes 51 and 52 are provided with similarly disposed openings 59 and 60.

Any desired form of broiler frame may be used in connection with my casing, described above.

l/Vhat I claim is,

1. In a broiler, the combination with a casing comprising end walls and side walls, one end wall being provided with an open vertical slot, of a strip upon the top of one of the side walls and extending over a por-' tion of the casing intermediate the end walls, a cover comprislng a high rear wall, a low front wall and an inclined top wall pivotally connected at the lower margin of its rear wall to the strip, said top wall being provided with an opening, a perforated strip upon the top wall covering the opening, a stop upon the side wall behind the cover, fuel pipes provided with perforations mounted in the casing, a frame pivotally mounted in the casing intermediate the pipes, and handles upon the frame extending through the slot in the front wall.

2. In a broiler the combination with a casing con'iprising side walls and end walls, one end wall being provided with openings, of a cover pivotally connected with the easing, a fuel feed pipe, branch pipes upon the feed pipe passing through the openings and extending across the casing adjacent the side Walls and provided with perforations, joints upon the ends of the branch pipes, supplementary pipes upon the joints extending above and parallel with the branch pipes provided with perforations, a brace connecting the feed pipe with the front end wall, a pivot pin in the rear end wall, a plate fixed to the pin and engaging the supplementary pipes, and a frame pivotally mounted upon the pin.

3. In a broiler, the combination with a casing comprising side and end walls, one end wall being provided with openings, of a fuel feed pipe, perforated branch pipes upon the feed pipe passing through the openings and extending across the casing adjacent the side walls, supplemental pipes upon the ends of the branch pipes extending above and parallel with the branch pipes and provided with perforations, a pivot pin in the rear end wall, a plate fixed to the pin and engaging the supplemental pipes, and a frame pivotally mounted upon said pin.
