OF BOANOKE, VIRGINIA.
SALT AND PEPPER SHAKER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Y Patgnted May 30, 1911,
Application filed December 5, 1910. Serial No. 595,666.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Beit known that I, HOWARD H. HUFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roanoke, in the county of Roanoke and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Salt and Pepper Shakers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in combined salt and pepper shakers.
One object of the invention is to provide a shaker of this character having an improved constructicn and arrangement of compartments and pockets in which the contents of one side will be caught and held while the the contents of the other side are being discharged.
Another object is toprovide a device of this character constructed in such a mannenf that the necessity of valves or slides for controlling the discharge of the contents from one side or the other is dispensed with.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arran ement of parts as will be more fully escribed and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a side view of my improved salt and pepper shaker; F ig. 2 is a central vertical sectional View thereof; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the manner in which the shaker is used; and Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the body portion of the shaker which may be of any desired shape and constructed of any suitable material. The body portion of the shaker is shown in the drawings as of elliptical shape in horizontal section and as having arranged through the center thereof a transverse vertical partition 2 which extends from the top to the bottom of the receptacle and divides the same into two compartments 3 and 4.
In each of the compartments 3 and 4 and on opposite sides and adjoining the partition 2, are formed pockets 5 and 6. The pockets are formed by transverse partitions 7 which extend from the top of the body 1 to a point a suitable distance above the bottom as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
On the top of the body portion of the shaker are arranged discharge tubes 8 and 9 which open through the top and communicate respectively with the salt and pepper compartments 3 and 4 between the partitions 7 and the opposite side edges of the shaker as shown. The tubes 8 and 9 are threaded and have engaged therewith screw .caps 10 and 11 the outer ends of one of which is provided with coarse perforations 12 and the other with finer perforations 13. The coarsely perforated cap 10 is arranged on the tube communicating with the salt compartment 3 while the cap 11 having the finer perforations is engaged with the tube 9 connecting with the compartment 4 containing the pepper.
In the operation of the shaker, the same is tilted edgewise in the direction of the compartment having the condiment desired whereupon the contents of this compartment will drop or slide down toward the discharge tube of said compartment while the contents of the other compartment will drop or slide down into the pocket of this compartment and will thus be prevented from being discharged when the device is shaken to discharge the contents from the other side through the perforated cap thereof. The compartments 3 and 4 are supplied with salt and pepper or other condiments by removing the caps 10 and 11 and introducing the condiment through the tubes 8 and 9.
By this arrangement of pockets it will be seen that no cut off plates or valves will be Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A condiment shaker comprising a recepta cle, a partition arranged therein and dividing the same into two compartments, said compartments each having combined discharge and filling openings, said openings being arranged adjacent to one side of the compartments, perforated caps removably secured to the receptacle over said openings, short partitions arranged in said rece tacle adjacent to the opfosite sides of said ividing partition, sal short partitions extending from the the receptacle thereby forming pockets on the opposite sides of the compartments from the discharge openings therem, whereby the contents of one compartment will be caught,
and held while the, contents of the other top to near the lower end ofcompartment are being discharged through the perforated cap thereof.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of the subscribing witnesses.
HOWARD HAMPTON HUFFMAN.
