CUSPIDOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 1911.
Application filed April 8, 1911. Serial No. 619,843.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN WVARREN Lovn- JOY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Steel, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to check valves for cuspidors, and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a cuspidor that can be advantageously used in depots, hotels and public places where a cuspidor is liable to be upset by pedestrians; second, to furnish a cuspidor with a novel check valve that is automatically closed when the cuspidor is tilted or upset; third, to provide a cuspidor that can be easily cleaned and maintained in a sanitary condition, and fourth, to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is simple, durable and ineX ensive to manufacture.
ith the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a cuspidor in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same.
The cuspidor comprises a cylindrical shell 1 having a fiat bottom 2 provided with an opening 3 having the walls thereof threaded. The opening 3 is located ofi-center of the bottom 2 for a purpose that will presently appear. The upper end of the receptacle 1 is reduced and exteriorly screw threaded, as at 4.
Detachably mounted upon the upper reduced screw threaded end of the receptacle 1 are the vertical walls 5 of a funnel-shaped mouth-piece 6, said mouth-piece having a central depending spout 7 with the lower edges thereof flanged to provide a valve seat 8.
Detachably mounted in the opening 3 within the receptacle 1 is a vertical tube, comprising a base section 9, an intermediate having the tops thereof closed, and the tops of the sections 9 and 10 have vertically alin ing openings 12 for a vertical plunger 13, said plunger having the upper end thereof provided with an eye 14 and the lower end thereof with a detachable head 15 adapted to normally rest upon the floor or support of the cuspidor. Encircling the plunger 13 is a coiled compression spring 16 having the upper end thereof engaging the top of the section 10 and the lower convolution thereof engaging a washer 17 mounted upon the plunger 13 within the section 10.
Pivotally connected to the upper end of the plunger 13 is a connecting rod 18 having the upper end thereof pivotally connected, as at 19 to a lever 20, said lever being pivotally mounted, as at 21 between apertured lugs 22 carried by the outer side of the section 11. The section 11 is provided with'a vertical slot 23 providing clearance for the lever 20. The lower end of the lever 20 is provided with a valve 24 adapted to engage the seat 8 and close the spout 7 When the cuspidor is in an upright position, the head 15 of the plunger 13 is retained in the lower end of the base section 9 of the tube with the coiled compression spring 16 under tension and with the valve 24 open. When the cuspidor is accidentally tilted or upset, the plunger 13 is released and the tension of the spring 16 is sufficient to shift the plunger 13, the connecting rod 18 and the lever 20 to close the valve 24. Immediately upon the cuspidor being placed in an upright position upon the floor, the valve is opened and the cuspidor is ready for use.
What I claim is A cuspidor comprising a receptacle having a flat bottom, a funnel-shaped mouthpiece detachably supported by the upper edges of said receptacle, a depending spout carried by said mouth-piece and providing a valve seat, a sectional vertical tube arranged within said receptacle and having the lower open end thereof detachably mounted in the flat bottom of said receptacle, a plunger arranged in said tube, a head detachably mounted upon said plunger within one of the sections of said tube, a coiled compression spring encircling said section 10 and a top section 11, the sections 1 plunger between said washer and one of the ends of the section of said tube, a connectver and adapted to engage the seat of said ing rod pivotally connected to the upper end spout, substantially as described. 10 of said plunger Within the upper section of In testimony whereof I affix my signature said tube, a lever pivotally connected to the in the presence of two Witnesses.
