J. D. WEST, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 99,381, dated February 1, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN LIGHTNING-RODS.
The Schedule referred to in then'Letten-Patent and making part of the lame.
Be it known that I, J D. WEST, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Mode of Constructing Lightning-Bods; and I "do hereby declare that the following is full and suffihing-rod. This plug may one, two, or more inches in length.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. 1
In the drawing- Figure 1, A, represents a section of lightning-rod,
1 and B represents the plug, which is, to connect the two sections of the rod togethen' Figure 2 represents a perspective view of a section of the tube and the plug.
My lightning-rod is best constructed of copper-tubing, drawn as awire through square dies of any length that may be easily worked, and may be put up in any direction convenient for protecting a building.
The plug B is inserted one-half its length into each of the contiguous ends of the sections'of the lightn'ing rod.
Near each end of the plug, and also at an exactdistance from the flush ends of the sections ot the tube,
is a depression, b, inthe side of the plug, made by a punch or other suitable instrument; and after the plug and the sections are put together, a corresponding depression, 12', is made in each section of the square tube'exactly over the depressions in the plug, which hold the sections firmly together. This plug may have fluted sides, so as to allow the passage of water or other fluid. ,\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A lightning-rod,- constructed in sections of square,-
, metallic tubes, and connected by means of the square plug, fastened substantially as described.
J. D. WEST.
