Description

FENCE POST Filed 001;. 6, 1928 Patented July 22, 1930.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JAY L. HENCH, OF I-IINSD'ALE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO MIDWEST FORGING COMPANY,
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION 'OF ILLINOIS FENCE POST Application filed October 6, 1928. Serial No. 310,824.
This invention relates to improvements in fence posts, and especially fence posts made of drawn tubing. j 7
One of the features of the invention is to provide a post of this character with a closed upper end in order to keep out moisture.
Other features and advantages of my invention will appear more fully as I proceed with my specification.
In the accompanying drawings, a form of device embodying the features of my invention is shown partly in section and partly in side elevation.
As shown in the drawings, the post is indi- D cated in general by 10, the same being made of drawn round tubing. The upper end of the post, as indicated by 10", is closed and tapered, coming to a point at 10 It is to be noted that the closed tapered end is integral with the post proper, there being no cap, joint, or separate member. It is to be noted, also, that the closed tapered end is formed without any wrinkles, joints or connections. That'is, the drawn tubing of the post itself is reduced in diameter at the end of the post, the metal of the end being integral to hermetically seal the end of the post. Since the end of the post is made integral with the post itself, and since there are no cracks, joints or openings in the formed post end, a very strong, rigid and durable structure is provided. The metal wall around the entire post end consists of metal of a substantially uniform and continuous texture, there being no slots, divisions or connections. This forms a very strong end for the post.
While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claim,
in which it'is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible in view of the prior art.
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A. metal post of a length many times greater than itsdiameter and consisting of a drawn seamless cylindrical hollow metallic body having a substantially conical seamless closed upper end integral with said body, the walls of said substantially conical upper end portion gradually increasing in thickness from the juncture with'said cylindrical portion to the top of the post.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this first day of October, 1928.
. JAY L. HEiNOH.
