PACKING-BOARD FOR TRUNKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 1911.
Application filed August 3, 1910. Serial No. 575,293.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVIL'roN S. MosBY, a citizen of the United States, residingat Newport News, in the county of \Varwmk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing- Boards for Trunks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to packing boards for trunks sample cases, packing boxes and similar devices, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a packmg board for pressing down and holding secure articles in a trunk or traveling case, said packing board being adjustably locked at any desired position in the trunk or travelmg case.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a packing board fitted in a trunk or traveling case, and provided with looking devices for holding the same in adjusted position in the trunk to firmly secure articles against movement when the trunk is moved about in transit.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a trunk or traveling case with the cover removed and showing the packing board in position for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical sect-ion taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the keepers adapted to be secured to the inner walls of the trunk.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates a trunk or packing case which may be of the usual or any suitable size or construction. Secured to the inner walls of the trunk or traveling case at suitable points are keepers comprising outwardly bent flanges 2 having screw holes 3 therein for securing the said keepers to the trunk body. Projecting inwardly from the flanges 2 is a rib or projecting portion 4 provided with slots 5 disposed at suitable distances apart for a purpose which will presently appear.
A packing board 6 is fitted to slide freely within the trunk or packing case 1, said packing board being made of a rigid piece of material having secured at points in line with the keepers 4, locking devices each comprising a sliding bolt casing 7 secured to the board by means of screws 8, said casing having a slot 9 in its upper side and a fiat sliding bolt 10 adapted to engage any of the slots 5 in the keepers 4. An operating knob 11 is secured to each of the bolts 10, the shank of said knob extending through the slot 9 and secured to the fiat bolt 10. Secured to the packing board 6 adjacent to the inner ends of the casings 7 are arcuate wear plates 12, each provided with a slot 13. A spring locking lever 14 pivoted at 15 to the board is provided with a downturned finger 16 which engages the slot 13 in the wear plate 12 when swung into line with the sliding bolt 10. A slot 17 is formed in the board in line with the slot 13 in the wear plate 12. The spring locking lever 14 is provided with a knob or handle 18 for operating the same. Lifting loops 19 may be secured to the upper face of the packing board 6 for lifting the board out of the trunk and replacing it.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that the packing board 6 being placed upon articles packed within a trunk or case, can be pushed down to firmly hold the articles in place against movement in shipping, said board being adjustably held in place by moving the sliding bolts 10 to engage any of the slots 5 in the keepers 4. hen the board has been properly adjusted in the trunk the spring locking levers 14 are swung into line with the bolts 10 and the fingers 16 will engage the slots 13 in the wear plates 12. When it is desired to remove the packing board the spring locking levers 14 are raised to withdraw the fingers 16 from the slots 13, said levers being then swung to one side or the other of the wear plate 6, permitting the sliding bolts to be moved inward to disengage them from the keepers 4.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a packing board made in accordance wit my invention, can be produced at low cost, can be applied to any trunk, traveling case or packing boX for holding articles firmly in the same to prevent movement during shipping.
I claim:
A packing board for traveling cases comprising a board fitted Within the case and In testimony whereof I afliX my signature provided gith ahseries of slilcilingfbolts, keepin presence of two Witnesses. v
