Box cox/ER FASTENER. APPLIVCATION FILED MAY 22, 1920- 1,864,802, 'Patented Jan. L(1,1921.
UNITED STATES LEWIS S. PRENTISS, 0F SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
BOX-COVER FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. a, 1921.
Application filed May 22, 1920. Serial No. 383,489.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Lnwrs S. lziiniv'riiss, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certa-in new and useful Improvements in Box-Cover Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in locking devices for box covers.
An object of the invention is to provide a device, so that the covermay be easily placed in position on the box and a sliding member moved into position to lock the cover on the box, said sliding member being secured against movement when in a cover locking position.
Other objects and improvements in the details of construction and operation will be particularly pointed out in the following description and claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box with the locking device attached.
Fig. 2 is a broken longitudinal sectional view showing the locking members.
Fig. 3 is a partial end elevation of the box showing the locking members in operative position.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the locking members.
1 indicates a box, having a cover 2, end walls 3 and side walls 4.
The end walls 3 are provided with rectangular recesses 5 in the upper corner portions, which are adapted to receive the ends 7 of the brackets 6 mounted on the cover at one end thereof.
7a are brackets rigidly mounted on the underside of the box, and at each corner thereof, these brackets keep the cover lirmly seated on the box to keep the cover from shaking or moving out of contact with the lock.
One of the end walls 3 is provided with a vertical groove 8 in the center portion on the inside and terminating in a horizont-al slot 9 in the end wall. The slot 9 extends through the end wall while the groove only opens on the inside face of the end wall as shown.
9a are reinforcing strips rigidly mounted on the cover 2.
The box cover has a locking bracket l() secured to the end opposite the brackets 6, having a depending portion 11, the end of which is bent laterally at 12,' and upwardly again as at 13, the edge forming a cam surface indicated at 14. When the box cover is'litted tight against the upper edge of the box, the portions 12 and 13 of the looking bracket extend into the slot 9 in the box.
A locking member 15 is formed with slots 16, through which screws 17 pass and slidably mount the member on the box end. One end of the member is formed with a laterally bent portion 18 to form a handle whereby the member may be moved by grasping the slide.. The upper edge of the member is bent inwardly at 19, extending into the slot 9, the edge of this portion being turned down as at 20, and tapered to form a cam face 21. The portion 2O is positioned so that it will engage the portion 13 of the locking bracket and the face 21 is adapted to coact with the face 14 in the locking` of the cover.
The slot 9 is of such dimension that the locking member may be entirely disengaged from the bracket to permit removal of the cover.
In locking the cover 2 in position, the ends 7 of the brackets 6 are inserted into the recesses 5 in the end walls and the cover then moved down onto the box tightly, the depending portion 11 of the locking bracket .sliding down into the slot 9 through the groove 8. The locking member is then moved to engage the bracket, the cam surfaces of each contacting and tightening the cover on the box as the member is moved to the left. When the cover is tightly locked in position, the screws 17 may be tightened against the locking member to lock it in position and prevent disengagement from the bracket.
Claims:
l. A locking device for box covers, comprising a box having a removable cover, one end wall of said box being formed with recesses in the corner portions thereof, brackets mounted on the cover having extending portions adapted to engage in the recesses, the other end wall of the box having a slot therein and a groove extending from the upper edge to the slot, a locking bracket secured to the cover formed with a depending portion having an upturned end provided with a cam face, a locking member slidably mounted on the end of the box and having the edge bent laterally and downwardly and extending in the slot, the down- Wardly extending edge having a cam surface adapted to engage the cam surface on the locking bracket, and means for securing` the locking member against sliding movement.
2. A locking` device for boX covers comprising a box havingend Walls, and aremovable cover, brackets mounted on the cover adapted to engage in recesses formed in the end Wall of the box, a locking bracket mounted on the cover having` a, depending portion formed with an upturned end, the
box being` formed with a slot and a groove to accommodate the depending portion of the locking bracket, a locking member having an overturned portion extending into the slot, Said member being slidably mounted on the outside and on the end of the box, the overturned portion being adapted to engage the upturned end of the locking bracket to lock the cover on the boX.
