Description

waited iatw @stent @titte JACOB MCCLURE, OF NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO C. D. COPP AND E. J. COPP, OF SAME PLACF.
Letters Patent No. 99,335, dated Febra/ry 1, 1'870 IMPROVEMENT IN PENCIL-SHARPENERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part cf the same To all whom itmay conce/rn Beit known-that I, J AooB MCCLURE, of Nashua, in .the county of Hillsborough, and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvenient in Pencil-Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in `the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sharpeners for lead-pencils, and consists in making the Sharpener inthe skeleton form, or as an open hollow cone, either square, diamond-shaped, or triangular, as may be desired, and also in the arrangement of projections or shoulders to guide the knife, as hereinafter more fully described. I
In the accompanying drawings- Figure l represents a side view of the Sharpener.
Figure 2 is an end view, showing the base or large end of the cone.
Figure 3 is a cross-section of fig. 1, through the line x x.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents. the cone, the interior form of which is seen in fig. 2. l
B is the knife, which is fastened by means of the screw C, and is detachable from the cone.
D represents the handle for holding the Sharpener when in use.k
e e are projections or shoulders on the throat of the Sharpener, to guide the setting of the knife.
fis an opening near the point of the Sharpener, to relieve the lead-point of the pencil when the sharpener is in use, and also that the point maybe exposed to view, thus lessening the risk of breaking. the point.
The guides e e govern the `position of the knife, and its circular form allows the knife to be turned or brought up to the guides, whether the ends of the cutting-edge are ground even or not.
The angular form of the interior of the cone causes less friction in using the Sharpener than a round or circular forni.
By this construction and arrangement, the objectionable features which render the pencil-Sharpeners which have been heretofore introduced comparatively worthless, are avoided.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Making the interior of the cone of a pencil- Sharpener of an angular form, substantially as and for the purposes described. v
2. In combination with a pencil-Sharpener, the guide projections or shoulders e e, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
JACOB MCCLURE.
