PATRICK. DOYLE, OF
Letters Patent No. 99,299, dated February 1, 1870.
IVZQULIDS- FOR MAKING @(DIWRBENBB ENG-GT3 OP SIF;
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pan of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK Dorm, of Newark, i Ess county, New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Mould for Making Combined Iron and Steel Ingots; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact' description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in moulds for making ingots of iron and steel, in a manner to dispose the one metal on one or more sides of the other, and secure a perfect union of the two; and
.l t consists in a vertical mould, of four or other mimhers of plain sides, one or more of which may be detachable, and clamped to the others by strong bands, in which a strong, thick plate of metal is arranged to fit near one side, from top to bottom, snugly, to occupy a part of the space, when the metal, of which the greater partof the ingot is io be composed, is poured in, and to remain until the same has solidified suiliciently to retain its position, when it is withdrawn, leaving a space for the other metal, which, being poured in, unites perfectly with the first, and forms the required composition ingot.
Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation of my improved mould;
Figure 2 is a section of the same, representing one kind of metal in it, and the plate drawn out for pouring the other;
Figure 3 is a top view of fig. 1 and Figure 4 is a top view of a mould, showing an arrangement of movable plates on two sides.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A. is the vertical flask or mould of metal, composed of three sides, a, permanently connected together, one side, I), detachably connected to the others, and a bottom, 0.
The side 11 is clamped against the others by strong bands (I, so that it may be readily detached.
The edges of the sides against which I) is clamped are bevelled slightly, so as to widen-the space toward I). The latter has set-screws e passing through it.
f is a plate, sliding down in the mould in 'front of b, extending'from top to bottom, and fitting snugly in the space between the walls 1 ".-h v is set-screws.
The iron or stecl,as may be required, is poured into the space bounded by the sides a. and plate f, and allowed to stand until solid enough to retain its position after the plate f is removed; the sct-scrci .are then slackencd away from f, to free it, 1 i ,-.t may be drawn out; the other kind of metal l r iron, as the case may he,) thc-n inimcdial "0-" in, and permanently unites with that already 9', fig. represents a quantity of in ready for the reception of that which a with it, the plate f being removed.
In this way, I am enabled to make ingots, composed of steel on one side of iron, for working down to any special shapes, for articles such as skate and sleighrunners, cutlery, 850., requiring to be of steel in one part, and iron in another.
1 may also, by means of moulds such as in fig. t, apply, in like manner, the of the iron, or the central part may i;
the mould, to be united represented 1 we sides other. In this case, the two opposit n fig. 4, would be bevelled near the edit, lease of other plates to be arranged between them, as shown in dotted lines h.
The sides I) need not necessarily be m ado detachable, but, for the more ready discharge oi. the ingot, 1 prefer it.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the plain-s whether having one or more of the so connected or not, of one or more plat for operation substantially as specified.
The above specification of my ini me, this 17th day of December, 1869.
' PATRICK DOYLE.
