A. HAMILL. STRAINER OR SAND VALVE. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 12, 1910.

To all whom it may concern;

STBAINER 0B SARDVALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1911.
Application filed September 12,1910. Serial -No. 581,523.
Be it. known that I, ALEXANDER HAMILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strainers or Sand-Valves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in strainers or sand valves, and has for an object the arrangement of means, including.
spaced disks, formed with depending edges for directing the water downward in order to maintain the space immediately adjacent the valve clear of sand or other obstruction.
Another object of theinvention is the arrangement in a sand valve, of a base formed with a cupshaped interior having a. spider construction positioned at the .top thereof merging into a threaded stem designed to 1'Q('G1\'C the water guiding disks, spacing means, and tension or retaining means.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel construe tions, combinations, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fullydescribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of an embodiment of the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the structure shown in Fi 1. Figs, 3 is a top plan view of the base. ig. 4 is a top plan view of the center perforated plate. Fig. 5 is an enlarged horizontal section through a disk shaped tension washer, the curvature thereoii being exaggerated. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the topplate. Fir 7 is a section through Fig; 6 on line 7 ln constructing a strainer or sand valve embodyingthe invention the same is arranged with a base having a depending flange or edge, and a plurality of disks mounted above the base but connected therewith. each. ofwhich is provided with depending flanges or edges arranged to be substantially parallel with the flange or edge of the base, so that water passing up through the base will be discharged in one or more sheets in a downward direction around the valve. This will prevent any accumulation of objectionable matter in the vicinity of the valve, and also will avoid the lifting of the filtration bed or displacement thereof from oil the strainer. Also by the arrangement of the downwardly extending flange or edge corrosion and filling up of the strainer is avoided, as no foreign matter can easily enter the valve.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood an embodiment of the sameis shown in the accompanying drawings, in which 1 indicates the base having a depending desired angle, preferably at a sufficient angle for causing the water to discharge in the vicinity of the base so as to keep that immediate vicinity clear of sand or other objectionable matter. Base 1 is provided with a threaded extension 3 and has threaded thereon a washer 4 of some soft metal in order that any corrosion or disintegration of the thread may be avoided by reason of the soft metal fitting into any unevenness of the pipe to which base 1 is secured. This will therefore make a tight joint and nothing can enter at this point to injure the threads, so that the strainer may be rewith a cup-shaped portion or recess 5 moved and again applied without injury. The upper part of the base 1 is provide? w 161 v is in free commimication with bore 6.
Arranged at the upper part of base 1 and extending across the recess 5 is a spider 7 causing a substantially even pressure throughout recess 5, and in this manner cause an even pressure of Water to pass through apertures 9 in plates or disks 10 and 10'. Plates or disks 10 and I0 are provided with depending flanges 11 similar to flange 2. Above etc 10 is provided a solid plate or disk 12 eving'a depending flange flange or edge 2 inclined at any 13 which overlaps or extends beyond the flanges therebeneath, Flanges or edges 13, 11 and 2 are all parallel so as to permit continuous sheets of water to be discharged from the openings between the respective disks. Disks or plates 10 ciently spaced apart and spaced from base 1 to equalize or substantially equalize the amount of water passing from openings 14, 15 and 16. Plates 10,10 and 12 arespaced apartby washers 17 which may be of any preferred thickness, and which may be removed and others of different thickness substituted as desired, so as to adjustthe size of the discharge openings 14, 15 and 16. Positioned on top of plate 12 is a dish shaped washer 18 surrounding stem 8. Washer 18 is held in position by a tension nut 19 which, pressing against the washer, substantially flattens the same against plate 12, and by this means a continuous tension is brought to bear upon the respective plates for holding the same properly in position, and for preventing any loosening of nut 19. l p
By the arrangement of the base 1 as set forth with a spider and threaded stem extending therefrom, together with spaced washers having depending edges, a. device is provided which is quickly and easily taken apart and cleaned and again assembled, and which at the same time permits the free flow of w'aterinto the filter without injury to the filter bed as by lifting the same or stirring the same. Also the depending flanges or edges protect the valve itself against the entrance of sand or other matter, whereby the valve is in a certain sense self-cleaning.
-The flange 13-of plate 12 overhangs the flanges of the other plates and of base 1, so as to protect the same against any pressure from above, and particularly protect the same against sand entering the openings between the washers.
In order to more thoroughly protect the various plates from being bent out of shape, and fromhaving the openings between the flanges closed, the respective plates are each provided with a plurality of depressions 19 of the samejhickness as washers 18, or substantially the same thickness. This will effectually prevent any closing up of the openings between the washers so that water may freely flow therethrough and be regulated in volume by the amount of water flowing through bore 6.
Base 1 is provided with a hexagon shaped portion 20 in order to accommodate a wrench for easily applying and removing the strainer whenever desired without injury to any of the parts. 1
f course it will be evident that the depressions 19,may be of any desired number, and depth, and also that the hexagon shaped portion 20 may be varied so as to present a ber, a
' base, an
square structure or any other structure desired adapted to receive a tool for applying and removing the valve without inJury to the same.
